Help!

I've now been trying to remove my intake manifold for the last 2 hours. The 2 bolts on the rear of the manifold are absolutely impossible to remove. Its the 2 on the straps on the back of my 94 ATX motor. one is 12mm and the other i believe to be 16mm. Why is this so hard?

Just remove the strap and loosen the bottom bolts and leave the tops on there. The bottom ones are slotted so that you can remove it with out taking them all the way out. Just look at the front ones you will see what I mean.

I just had my intake off last weekend on my 94 ATX. You need to remove the bolt on the top drivers side bracket (strap). The passenger side bracket has a nut that a grounding cable attaches to. Remove the nut, then remove the bolt that bolts the bracket to the intake. Then as Ishodu said, just loosen the lower bolts and slide the bracket up.

all right, intake off. Now I'm curious...the carbon buildup in the intake ports is rediculous. Am I going to hurt the engine by using mulitple applications of carb cleaner to get it all out? My suspicion of no maintenance having been done to this car appear to be right. 4 of the 6 plug wells were deep in oil and i havent gotten the valve covers off yet, but I'm pretty sure its going to want to make me cry when I see what's within.

valve cover bolts are stuck, will WD-40 loosen them?

I dont think WD-40 will help as the bolts are very long. What I would use is a 5mm hex adaptor for a socket driver and be very careful. If you strip it you will have to get them from a parts car.

Am I going to hurt the engine by using mulitple applications of carb cleaner to get it all out?

My suggestion is to leave it alone as hard as it might be. If you really want to do it right, you have to take the intake apart. Not worth the effort IMHO.

If you use alot of carb cleaner, it'll seep down and wash the oil film from your cylinder walls and end up down in the oil pan. Solvents in oil are no good.

Use kerosene to clean the carbon build-up, it wont contaminate the oil and any extras will burn off in the cylinders. Just get whole roll or paper towel and some kerosene and take your time to wipe it ALL off, I used a long pipe cleaner sorta thing hooked up to an electric drill and got a whole lotta stuff outta me runners. I did have to take them apart tho, i didnt think it was that bad. Just take your time and spend a day cleaning those babys up, you will be happy when u are done. BTW if you clean your TB too along with the runners using kerosene, when u start the car it will run rough for a bit and you will most likely have to adjust your TB stopper thingy because the gunk caused the TB to always be open a little due to gunk build up, well now its clean so its like closed. The engine will die cause of not enough air flow so bump up the idle a little bit...

do I carb clean out the inside of the valve covers or just the outside?

It was definitely as bad as I thought when the valve covers came off. I'm just hoping that the AutoRX that I bought will clean the sludge off of the cams. Anyone have any slick ideas for cleaning the intake runners?
