Probably just a bit of oil working its way past the shaft seal (turbo internally). Mine smokes all the time and has a bit on the tips every week yet never burns any oil noticeable on the oil dipstick. There are 2 turbos, if the car is running great and dont burn oil then dont worry. Its the twin turbocharged life. I dont think there has ever been a TT engine that is clean running.

My theory has always been thats maybe some of the gunk in the intake valves causes it when it flows in with the air. Only takes a very little spec of oil to make a good bit of smoke. And at 30k miles when i looked at mine they were very dirty in a short amount of time. Use a catchcan but still run crc intake valve turbo cleaner through the intake at every oilchange. Catchcan gets id say half of it but still needs a good spray down. Or add a meth jet

Run crc intake valve and turbo cleaner through it. Then get some techron concentrate and add it to the tank. For a couple tank fulls. Might need a good cleaning

Are you saying the nut for the turbine wheel was off?

That sucks! Might think about changing both at the same time.
I would also add, replace the lines too while you’re at it. If nothing else, the filter screens on the feed lines. I’m convinced those not being replaced, either by laziness, or ignorance, are the main cause of repeated premature turbo failure on these engines.

Agreed on the inlet screens! Very easy to clean but most don't know they are there.

Definitely, only thing is should I replace both with the same ones from ford or are there any other ones that are better than stock turbos.
Depending on your timing - if this car is a daily driver or not - you can send your turbos to be reman - upgraded - however I caution you - you will need to have them tuned by a reliable and competent tuner. For instance Gearhead will upgrade them - BUT will require you to buy their tuning.

Do both as echoed here by others - and I would replace with stock new, stay away from eBay.

I highly agree those screens are a big issue. Mine were covered when I pulled them out after my rear failed. The turbine shaft on mine broke. They are currently at TurboBay being rebuilt with a Stage 3 and Brad is tuning it when they get back. I was given a 4-5 week lead time. They received them on 6/9 and I was told last week they will be shipping out on 7/7.
