Hi all and thanks in advance for your help. Background - I bought the car new and it is all original - most of it never touched. It is all in mint condition, stored winters, never seen snow etc. Recently at 160K I put in new plugs and wires and general service and it ran great for a while.

New symptoms: First of all intermittant, driving along and at the same time the climate control screen flicks off and then resets to 75 auto and he engine cuts out momentairly. At idle ,when I turn on the lights, you hear a growl from under the hood, the engine bogs down and almost stalls and then the lights turn on and the engine stabilizes. Did this with both the old and new alt - feels like the alt is trying to power NYC. While driving, touch the brake pedal and the tranny downshifts to second (at 45mph) and then upshifts. This must be some sort of central electical issue. I drive with the overdrive locked out on local roads but when one of thiese thigns happens, the OD lockout light goes out and it upshifts to OD. When it's acting up, I hear a wine from under the hood - sounds like the alt.

For starters, I checked the voltage from the alternator. It started out over 14V but dropped below 13 over some time running in the garage. It also fluctuated quite a bit and since it was the original alt, I replaced it with a reman Motorcraft. It is giving 13.8 to 13.9 and much more stable than the old one. The battery is 5 years old but checks out at 12.65 volts after sitting all night. The car starts fine and during cranking the voltage drops down to about 10.something but comes right back up. Battery seems strong.

Is this normal? When I connected the negative terminal whild putting the battery back in, there was a fairly large spark when it touched - not the kind of spark you would expect since nothing was turned on, bulb removed from hood and trunk closed.

When it is not acting up, everything works fine. There have never been any electical issues and the electical wiring has never been touched other than changing the alt and putting in new wires.

Here is where I beg for help since I hate electriclal issues! Thanks in advance.

Update

No one has any ideas about this???? I took out the ECU (its a H3Z2 by the way and this is an early 93) and examined both sides of the printed circuit board and it looks perfect. I guess the next step is to have it tested by a local Ford dealership. Guess I will also take the battery out and have it tested as well just to be sure.

The grounds all look good and I cleaned them up anyway.

I sure would like to hear from some of you guys that know how this stuff all works.

I hear your pain. My 94 ATX has similar isuues. It runs fine until you start switching on Accesories. ie AC, Lights,Stereo, Rear Defroster. With each accesorie added it run's worse.
I have posted my problem but like you , no one has resonded with ideas as to where to look.

I think at this point you need to have an electrical professional look at it. Alot of us hate electrical gremlins and often pay someone to figure it out. Probably why responses are few.

Well Skeezer and luigisho thanks for getting back to me. Been away a few days and just got back. Personally, I suspect the ECM or the integrated relay. Am going to do some further checking and then may just elect to replace those components assuming I don't find a burned wire/bad ground etc. Dealer wants $88 per hour to diagnose and wasn't too positive about the outcome. I am sure the mechanics hate this kind of job and the ECM is a discontinued part now. There are some used and remans available.

I am trying to find a ford mechanic who wants to moonlight for starters. I hope I can figure this out and then post the answer. These are great cars - too bad Ford didn't support them better.

You have a low voltage issue. The random transmission shifts and the EATC rebooting are the giveaways.

What kind of condition are your battery cables in? Are the battery terminals and connectors clean? If they are, are the cables in marginal condition? If so, replace them.

Also, revisit all of your grounds, make sure they're snug and free of corrosion.

Well a quick update for anyone interested. I checked all the grounds and they all seem good. Even disconnected the battery and checked wires with ohm meter. I did find a good used H3Z2 computer at NortheastSHO in Spencer MA for $75 and since it is only a 40 min trip, went up and got it and put it in. Did not fix problem but I think I have a new clue. I am going to post a new topic on this so as to not confuse the issue.

New clue, car started right up, idled fine and as soon as I put my foot on the brake, a growel from under the hood, engine bogs down and ABS light comes on. Let off brake, engine resumes proper idle. Turn off car and restart and ABS light is off and car runs fine all the way home.

ABS module? Brake pedal has a position switch that grounds the ABS system to turn on the pump - I am still trying to figure this out - waiting for factory service manual.

Any ideas?
