Hi Everyone..
I posted this same question on the temp. forum but here it is again. I just bought a '93 SHO with 91k on it. But I am having a lil prob with the steering. When I make a semi sharp or sharp turn the wheel kind of twitches in the other direction. The Ford dealer said it might be the pump associated wit the rack or the rack itself. Any inputs? THey were asking for $900 and was wondering if anyone knew a SHO mechanic here in WA or a knowledgable SHO member..Also With the A/C and Heater I have no in between its either on or off..If I hcnaged out the whole unit would that fix the prob?

Thnks

R & R Steering fluid

Check the power steering fluid. If it is dirty replace it with any ATF available. Follow the drain procedure at the power steering cooler. It is hard to get much more than a quart out. Take your time.

Drive it for 50 miles

Replace again with a high quality Synthetic ATF.

This should help if it is not already to worn from the dirty fluid.

If the PS is properly serviced your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) provides the VAPS (veriable assist power steering) with speed info to adjust the steering rate. So either the VSS or the Power steering rack valve is bad.

AC/Heater run a diag on the EATC to confirm proper operation, If all is good then your Blower Control Module needs replaced.

my steering does the same thing. jerks back and forth slightly while turning. i just replaced the vss also due to the transmission shifting very harshly and downshifting at odd times. dunno anything to do about the steering though, i've just been dealing with it. would love to hear a fix for it.

When I drain the Power Steering..Why would I use ATF instead of power steering fluid? Im sure theres an explanation I was just wondering..and where do I find draining procedures?

Fluid Type Specifications
Power Steering Fluid Type Type F ATF
By the book (always more than one way to skin a cat)
Service and Repair

1. Disconnect power steering return hose.
2. Place return line in suitable container, then plug reservoir return line at reservoir.
3. Fill reservoir with suitable power steering fluid.
4. Disconnect coil wire, then raise and support front wheels.
5. While adding about two quarts of fluid, turn ignition to START position, then crank engine with starter and turn steering wheel right to left.
6. When all the fluid is added, turn ignition OFF, and connect coil wire.
7. Remove reservoir return line plug, then connect line to reservoir.
8. Fill reservoir to specified level.
9. Lower vehicle, then start engine, slowly turn steering wheel several times lock to lock. Recheck fluid level and add as required.
