Well we're all set to change the timing belt and CPS on the plus, and then I see the timing belt, (Goodyear Gatorback 40248) only has 3 lines on it, two for the cam sprockets and one for the pulley on the crank, but as this is the same part number listed for a 3.2 I'd rather not install a belt that's off by one tooth if that tick mark was meant for a 3.2 install.

Any ideas?

This is what I'm talking about, it only has one mark here where as others have two and they're labelled..

Matt,

Match the new belt up to the old one and confirm your marks. I recently saw a belt with no marks, so it may be a sign of the times that we will have to start marking our own belts.

I agree with James; if you are running the 3.0 accessories and timing belt tensioner set up (even if it is a 3.2 conversion), you should line up on the 3.0 line. The 3.2 line is for the 3.2 tensioner assemblies and the 3.2 cams.

Hope that helps.

Not to hijack, but Mike, which belt did you see that didn't have any marks? Just wanna warn people to stay away from those, Gates and Goodyear still mark them.

James

The picture I posted is from SHO Phoenix Project, that's not my car... The belt on the car now does have two marks (3.0/3.2) but the new one only has one and is the same PN for both 3.0 and 3.2 so I just wasn't sure which that one mark was for.

Thanks Mike I didn't even think of something so simple as to count the teeth. :nut: :thumb:

Line the dot on the crank sprocket with the "bump" on the oil pump, as seen in the photo. Do the same for the cam sprockets, and the "bumps" on the rear timing cover.

This method will work on any stock 3.0L or 3.2L SHO V6.

This method will NOT work on a 3.2L engine/oil pump using a 3.0L timing belt tensioner setup. You will be one tooth off.

Thanks,
Hamal.

I don't know the brand. It was a club member from Seattle that bought it at the local parts store. To Matt's point, I have seen the Schucks/Checker/Kragen belts come with only one line for both applications.

So far NAPA(Gates) have had both marks, but I am keeping a spare belt handy in case I get one with no marks.

The belt on my car is a Goodyear, and only had one line as well. It threw me off when I went to check the timing after I got the car, as I expected to see two marks as well. FWIW, the marks on mine were correct for the 3.0L.
