I’ve got a 1991 ford taurus SHO and the stereo system has a cassette stuck in it keeping it stuck on tape so I can’t switch to FM. Is there a way to fix it because the radio seems to be in decent condition besides the stuck tape or do I just need to replace it? Also if I do need to replace it does anyone know where to find a decent one is?IMG 3451

stock replacement? I usually just went aftermarket because my cars were never a show quality collector car. You can look for used, but these head units always had problems with tapes and cds getting stuck. You can reach out to places like https://www.mnrelectronics.com/printable-radio-repair-form/
and see if they can repair your head unit.
You can screw around and go for broke trying to pry it out or open it up and see if you can get it to eject if you are not worried about getting the cassette player to work.

Try to keep the radio, nothing you can buy now will look as good in your dash.
You can get a removal tool from a parts store or on the internet (looks like 2 u shaped wires) and you can get it out of the dash if you need to.

Someone on here will know how to get the old cassett out of the radio, and if not, try to Google it. There are people who used to repair VCRs and this will be no problem for them.

There are lots of these old radios sitting around and if you put an ad on this forum, someone will have one to give / sell. There are a few levels of radio equipment in the 91 Ford family, and this one looks like a base / standard model.

The mechanics to get the tape to eject are usually not too bad to figure out once the radio is opened up. It gets a bit tougher if the magnetic tape is wound around places it's not supposed to be, but if you're lucky, the issue will just be a bad rubber belt and either a new one can be fitted, or the spindle rotated to eject the cassette tape. It's been awhile since I've had one of these open so I don't remember if the cassette eject is belt driven or direct drive. With the cover off would be a good time to inspect the volume control for conductive material transfer. I've had to repair a couple of those that would go full volume as soon as the key was turned on due to the conductive paint for the button having stuck to the contact instead of the button dome.

The second one from the bottom. Find a cheap one and pop that thing out. It's not like you have a lot of cassettes around, I assume?

Im pretty sure the tap never actually made it far enough down and got stuck half way so hopefully it is an easy fix. Also the volume button works, if I turn the radio on it just gives me static sound in tape mode so I’ve been able to adjust the volume.

There are plastic parts in the drive engagement mechanism. Sometimes they break and get jammed inside. It may or may not disengage by opening the housing and manually pushing the slide. Check out this lincoln casette vid from about 7 min in.

Did you ever find a resolution? I have the same issue with the stereo in my 89. i was going to swap it, but would be nice if I could get it working.
