Yeah, sounds like a spun cam.. BUT id be surprised if it actually ran with the entire rear valve train STOPPED... Sounds like you get to disassemble a 3.4 V8! ;)

they'll run with a spun cam.

I'd say that sounds like a spun cam or a cam that's about to spin. Assuming it didn't lose power and that it will idle on its own without dying(spun cam motors will not idle and will die if you don't give it throttle) you need to get the cams welded ASAP.

If the cam did in fact spin you're gonna probably be in need of a new motor considering that valves running into pistons rotating at high speeds is not conducive to maintaining the integrity of the pistons. However, assuming it hasn't run for long Jard at Quality Auto in Grand Island(the guy Al Fitz has do cam welds) did say that they can be brought back to life.

Ive had a spun cam before. This doesnt sound like it. but when i do my tear down to look at it ill check for sprocket movement. on my old motor that had the sprocket sprung it was on the same cam that this noise is comming from. the engine has been welded already.

I would guess what E1 mentioned as an AC Pulley or Tensioner, and if it is not that it is a ejected shim.

So basically bad to worse...

so one how hard is the tensioner, two how hard is the shim, to replace/fix? what all do i need for these. I am going to attempt to get this done this weekend and since i have to go 100 miles to waco to do it Id like to be as prepared as possible. thanks

I have done nothing mechanical to my car besides weld the cams, change coils, clean the intake, and install LIM phenolic spacers. I can't tell you how hard that stuff is to change. Did you look over at v8sho.com?

Honestly I have no desire to work on this engine any more.
