I just completed my lower and upper 60k on my 95 atx. When I started her back up there was a very noticable knocking sound coming from what appears to be the valvetrain. It's concentrated around cylinder #1. Any ideas?

Also, not sure if it's related. But when I tried to start it up for the first time, it took several seconds (15-20) before it started. It also sounded "different" when the starter was cranking. Not sure how else to describe it.

Thanks,
Jim

How fast is the knocking sound? Is it half of engine speed or with engine speed? If it's half of the engine speed than its something on the upper part of the motor. Did you line up the timing belt marks for correct timing? A shim could have popped out of place.
Use a screwdriver and place it between your ear and the motor, then try to hear where the knock is most obvious. Also, don't run the motor any more than you have to, it could be a vital knock.

Update. Call it operator error....

I failed to tighten the bolts for the timing sprockets on the cam shafts. The one closest to the firewall had started to really loosen up. Got everything tightened down and re-aligned the belt (not sure if it jumped or not). All is well.

Thanks everyone for all the help during this process!
