I have a 1991 MTX with 153,000miles...

I have a new spec stage 3 clutch, New TOB, New Fidanza and Redline D4 fluid.... New Clucth cable and new Cluctch quadrant, New Rodshifter ball and socket. All about 2000 miles ago.

Driving down the road the other day I go from 1st to 2nd then to 3rd and hmmm I can't move the shifter over to 3rd or any other area at all.

weird as I might say... 1st and second are so flawless that I can't imagine anything being wrong. I simply can't move my sifter over at all

Does anyone have any ideas or is it time for a new MTX

Does the transmission have oil in it? Some 91's had cable shifters.(is this true?) did you break the plastic pop on ball socket at the shifthandle linkage? It happens.

If you are hitting a wall when you go from second over to the three/four shiftgate, then it's time to see Bizzy.

Edit: Sometimes I just don't read the whole post. Since this is a cable shifted car, I would bet that there is a problem in the cable mechanism or in the shifter.

To make sure it's not the tranny, follow safe jacking procedures. Chalk and support the vehicle with 2 jackstands so that the front wheels are at least 3 or 4 inches off the ground. Have a helper operate the clutch and attempt to shift gears. Inspect the motion of the transmission input shaft. IIRC When shifting from 1 to 2, the input shaft moves inward through 2 stages - think "click, click". When shifting from 2-3 the shaft first move out, then spins clockwise, then moves out some more. My guess is that it wont spin clockwise. This could happen if there is slack in the cable such that the input shaft is not going in or coming out all the way. If this IS the case, it should be corrected immediately. If there is nothing wrong with the cables or the shifter then you may have more problems.

You can investigate further by stripping the shift linkage from the input shaft of the tranny while in first gear. You should be able to push in and pull out the input shaft through 3 spots by hand. 1st, neutral, 2nd...and back (helper on the clutch). Stick a short screwdriver in the hole at the end of the input shaft. While in neutral(the middle spot), you should be able to twist the shaft clockwise and counter clockwise. If does not twist relatively easy, have your helper rotate the drivers tire while you twist. If it still dosent twist, you have internal transmission problems for certain. Contact Bizzy. She might know a reputable SHO MTX rebuilder in your area or have some other advise.

I hope I've given sound advise.

I had a similar problem in my 91 Mocha with the cable shifter. My problem was the end of the shift cable. Juts a sugguestion, but a rod shifter is sooo much better than the cables. Now's a good excaust to change it.

I have a rodshifter peeps... with all the other stuff including a new rodshifter ball and socket..

Anyways...

my stick is stiff all except perfect flawless smooth operation of 1st and 2nd, just simply can't budge it over to any other gear as it wants to go back to 1st and 2nd. Could it be the front of the rodshifter going to the tranny... Maybe I need to rebuild that so its tight and takes up all the slack... Its just weird to loose 4gears just like that..

My diagnosis procedure is still correct. Only it's easier now that you have a rod shifter. One little 10mm nut and you can pull the rod off of the input shaft and try to twist it while it is in the middle of the gate(neutral). If it wont twist, even if the wheels are being wiggled, you need a tranny. If it will twist, you have a linkage issue.
