MY car is rock solid in the back, I cannot move the rear suspension at all, are my struts bad, or is it my shocks? If I were to jack up my car right now, the wheels would not drop even a mm. they are all the way compressed, and will not lift or anything, the only suspension I have in the back is the rubber on the tires, and that is a VERY hard ride, I get out with a headache. any help?

What struts are you running? Last year the rear of my 92 MTX felt like I had no suspension at all, it was rock solid. Still have those same struts on, Tokico's, now with 110,000 miles on them. Waiting to see what they do this year.

Your original struts were probably ready for retirement around 40,000 miles. Is there any hydraulic fluid visible on the external surfaces of the struts? Even if there isn't, your orignal equipment struts are most certainly worn out. Struts usually fail by leaking fluid at the shaft seal. Yours have probably rusted inside to the point of being immovable.

A note on the Tokicos. They have a lifetime warranty. I have received from Tokico a set of four struts to replace a set under warranty that had covered 125,000 miles. One strut developed a leak at the shaft seal. Even after 125,000 miles, I could not tell much of a performance difference with the new set. That is impressive.

Earlier this summer their was some brownish greasy oily stuff leacking from the rear of my car, could this be it? If so is it too tough to change them?

I just had one strut freeze up on me today. I know I need new struts and springs but I hear the Tokico's are on backorder now. I will probably end up getting KYB GR2's and stock springs because I don't want to shell out the money for the Koni's.

That "brownish greasy oily stuff" was most likely the hydraulic fluid from the strut(s). Without it, they can't dampen the vertical motion of the car and they are no longer lubricated and may eventually wear to the point of seizing. Struts have a lifetime. The OEM struts on the Gen Is only had a lifetime of around 40,000 miles. I believe you have gotten as much life out of them as possible. They are dead now. Put them to sleep. (That means your front struts too.)

Unless you have done some suspension work on your car, you may be better off paying a shop to do the job. It is a good 2-4 hours of work to replace the two rear struts/springs even with the right tools and the experience.

Thanks, yeah I guess I better get on that, I havent been driving it, the ride it just too rough, it literally shakes ALL of my insides! it hurts after a while. I will be doing the struts myself, I am very mechanically inclined, as I have help also from my 1989 car shop manual. Thanks for all the advise.

Hmmmm well the rear struts don't scare me half as much as the front struts. Wowzers! There's a headache.

SHO SPD,

Give yourself a whole day to do all 4 by yourself. It took my bro an me about 9 or 10 hrs to do the Eibach/Koni thing. Oh, and have some acetaline handy. Those pinch bolts on the knuckles can be a Bee-atch

How much are the Tokicos, normally? I've seen Konis as low as $500 for all 4 at two or three different websites (http://www.prosuspension.com, http://www.iptech.tv, and I think http://www.shox.com had a good deal on them too).

I thought that Tokicos ran about the same...

The Tokico's are around $440 for a set of 4. The Koni's are a little more expensive, and if I were to get Koni's I would spend another $150 on some stock struts to be the Koni inserts into. I don't trust the struts that are in there now. They could be bent, plus they are all rusty and I just like having all new parts put in.
