I dont know what is wrong. I have a 1991+ MTX Sho. I was driving down the road today, and my clutch has been slipping for the past few days, so i am takin it easy and i shifted into what i thought was 2nd to take a easy turn and i somehow shifted it into 4th, and then i got up to 45 and tried to shift into 5th and i somehow shifted into 3rd. I dont know what is wrong, but i can only shift into 3rd and 4th, no 1st, no 2nd, no 5th, no reverse. Please Tell Me What I Should Do!!
I NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET!

Does the shifter feel sloppy? The easy thing to be wrong is the stabilizer bar bolt came out of the tranny. The shifter bars will then just flop around and not move to the selected gears.

By sloppy do you mean that i can move the shifter in like a circle and not hit anything? if so yes

Climb underneath the car and look in the middle. You should see 2 rods that run towards the back of the car to a black box.On of those rods is supposed to be bolted to the tranny case for stability. There is one large bolt that holds it on.This bolt is known for comming loose, falling out,and sometimes stripping out the threads. The bolt can`t be purchased from Ford, and can`t be bought from a bolt supplier because of it`s design.Best bet(if this is your problem)is to find threaded rod and make your own.I have some here somewhere if it comes to that.Good luck, let us know what you find.

The inability to shift gears does not affect the ability of the clutch to engage - two different systems. The lack of grab by the clutch can only be caused by worn clutch disc friction material or weakened pressure plate springs. Both of these parts are in the clutch. You need a new clutch.

The inability to select other than gears 3 and 4 have to do with the shifter, linkage or transaxle internals. I hope that you case is as simple as the loosened stabilizer bolt on the rod shifter, or a broken or damaged cable or lever on a cable shifter.

If its a cable shifter the top cable pivot has popped out. You can pop it back in place and wrap it with wire.

You're looking at anywhere from $300 for a self-installed OEM clutch, to well over $1000 for a custom clutch installed by a mechanic. I went the first way, and am quite satisfied. I think next time I'd like to try something a little more special though.

If you want to try it yourself, look for Scott Patterson's recent posts about his clutch replacement (search for "clutch time"). His is experience is very well documented and has useful information for you.

The stabilizer rod on mine cracked in two...the bolt was still tight as you know. But I had the same exact symptoms as soon as it went out, I felt it happen. Mine is still jimmy rigged as of today basically "splinted" Obviously, I’m still looking for the rod shifter assembly.......HINT....HINT thumbs_u
