Help! I got in the car this morning drove 5 miles and stopped to get something to eat. When I was at the drivetrough I thought I herd a tapping noise comming from the engine. When I got to work just a mile away it was worse, it is comming from the rear cams the middle set. Could have a shim failed? Any suggestions on what it may be?

id say either rod bearings, camshaft chains, or doubtfully shim. If your SHO has some mileage >125K could be time to replace rod bearings. When my rod bearings were going bad I could here a slight knock. It was more noticeable if you listen near the passenger side wheel well. Id get a long screw driver and start probing it on different areas of the engine and see if you can pinpoint it. When a shim is out of spec it shouldnt make a loud sound unless you threw a shim, which is unlikely unless you just did a 60K adjustment. Regardless of your problem, i would limit trying ur SHO until you can find the problem. Of course, the valve covers are much easier to take off than the oil pan. Id start there, look at the chains and valve lash. If you cant find a problem there, more than likely its your rod bearings.

disconnect vacuum line going to the butterflies, if the noise goes away, then it is the butterfly valves ticking, otherwise it is what the others said...

ATX or MTX? Mileage? I once had a noise sounded like rod bearings was told that's what it was. Wrong it was my timing belt tensioner 95ATX belt was slapping the upper cover. So don't asume the worst. Use the long screw driver method like mtxstud said.

Now what?

OK, I took the valve covers off today. The cams and shims look almost brand new, I'm going to check the lash while there off. The cam chain on the back bank of cylnders is just slightly loose, just loose enough to wiggle. Is this ok?

After closer inspection the noise seems to be comming from the middle of the motor, it's not any louder on the passenger side. It also is not as loud at higher RPM's but very loud at idle. It is a loud clacking/tapping sound.
It's not the butterfly valves I checked them first, and there is't any power loss. Could it be the rod berings?
