This is my Son's 91. He is in Boston, me in St. Louis. He just called and said he had to drop it off at the shop because he couldn't get the shifter to go into anything except 3 & 4. He could move the lever but as soon as he released it, it would spring back to 3rd or 4th whichever was closer.

Ths shop looked at it and said it was the 'pivot cable'???? I don' tknow what this is or if this even makes sense.

They also suggested:

Left Front Inner Tie Rod (includes alignment): $210
Left Front Hub Bearing: $215
and said he has holes in his exhaust that could allow dangerous CO into the car???? they want to cut the exhaust off at the holes and weld new tubing on and install new mufflers for $500. Sounds like BS plus sounds high. Whats a cat-back go for on these cars?

He's away at school and I odn't want him to get taken but don't want to advise him to put these things off unti lhe returns for summer if they are known problems and should be dealt with.

What do yo think?

Thanks

I'd say fix the shifting problem, inner tie rod end, and the wheel bearing. The exhaust I dont think is that important, and there charging alot to have it done. Might want to look for a cheaper mechanic.

I think it sounds expensive. If you cannot preform the work yourself, go ahead and have everything but the exhaust done, thats a real ripoff IMO.

I'd suggest getting in touch with Fred Hurder, he's not in Boston but I think Boston is about an hour from where his shop is. (guessing....it may be closer) If he could set up an appointment with Fred he'd get a qualtiy job done at very reasonable rates by a person who's worked on more SHOs than he could shake a stick at. Search out Yamaha V6, if I was in his shoes that's what I would do.

Yeah, I highly recommend just telling the shop no thanks, and getting the car out of there.

As mentioned, Fred Hurder at http://www.neshospecialists.com is the right person for this, and is located about an hour west of Boston in Spencer, MA. I don't want to step on Fred's toes in terms of pricing, but I'd be willing to bet that he can save you close to 50% on what you've been quoted, and he knows these cars inside out, upside down, and backwards so you can have the utmost confidence that not only will the work be done right, but he will be honest about what does and does not need attention.

The distance from Boston to Spencer is about 65-75 miles depending on where in the city the car is. Is the car the least bit driveable, or would he be better off having it towed? If needed, Fred might be able to help get it towed out to Spencer for less money than a yellowpages tow truck would.

Small world with the GTP owners stopping in. You're email has been responded to sir.

Well, the time you were at my Grand Prix modday turned me on to this site. That plus the fact my son had the SHO. You've helped us GP owners out so I thought I'd try the SHO community. Enthusiasts usually are a great group.

I wasn't wrong. I appreciate all the comments. Thanks guys. I'll definitely be recommending Fred.

Shoot me an email if you need - [email protected]

FYI, I do have a 1990 parts car out back, which will have the shifter cable(s) you need, since they're long since discontinued. However, a more common approach is to eliminate the sloppy cable shift mechanism entirely and replace it with a mid-91 on rod shifter. There is some modifying required to make that work. If your exhaust has been replaced with something aftermarket, chances are you're in fairly good shape. If not, it's going to be a project to go that route.

However, since he "has holes", and you're looking at a cat-back system anyway, the rod shifter problem is moot, and the only thing you'd need is the proper shift boot.

Cat Back from Dynomax (www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com) is just under $300 shipped, typically, new donut gasket, some hangars, and a few hours labor. The $500 estimate is bogus for cutting & welding, but not for an entire new cat-back system w/ new resonator, piping & mufflers. FYI, I paid $850 installed for a new, made-to-spec stainless cat-back system a few years ago at a very good exhaust shop (which has since gone under). $500 for a chunk of pipe is bogus.

The bearing runs around $50 at Autozone for a Timken, from memory. I THINK I have one on the shelf, but don't have a press to replace it correctly. Tie rod end & hub / spindle work are going to mean an alignment is likely after as well.

More info on my shop are at the website previously mentioned. Best of luck to you & your son, if you need anything, please feel free to contact me.

The Timkin Bearing must be pressed in, IIRC...

As for exhaust... I paid $450 for what I THOUGHT was a Dynomax mandral bent cat-back.

The A-hole ripped me. It wasn't until 8 months later that I even found out that it was a crush bent piece of crap with "quiet-flo" B.S. mufflers. I just never looked because I wasn't really into the car at the time (too busy working on others!) The thing hangs poorly and makes ticking noises (i.e. leak). Boy, was I stupid not to look earlier. It was when I first bought the car year and a half ago... I had no idea that a "friend" would rip me off so huge.

He worked at Monroe Muffler in Monroe, CT. He was accused, shortly after working on my car, for stealing outrageous amounts of tires and ripping off customers.

When it comes to exhaust work, be cautious.

The rest sounds right, and the prices even sound right for someone who doesn't have an inwith the SHO world. Parts are hard to find and expensive to people who don't know SHOs.

But Listen to Fred. :hail:

where in Boston is he and who is the shop the car is at??

Route 1 motors in or near Malden MA. He plays goalie for the Boston Jr Blackhawks. They play in Saugus, MA. I'm teling you thins to help describe where in Boston he is. For all I know Route 1 motors could be in Peabody.

appreciate the help. Its one thing when I try to get help for my car. At least I have a job and all. He is a poor college student (some of you can remember that and some may still be there now), so al the help we can get him is definitely appreciated.

Thanks again.

The help you are giving us is renewing my faith in having him keep his SHO. We were getting frustrated with not getting the right service and have been considering bailing.
