I have a 2013 SHO with 110,000 miles. My heater recently started to not heat the car when it's stationary. It wasn't doing it all the time, but now it is. When I accelerate, then I get heat. But if the car is idling or I'm at a stop light, I get no heat. The dealership is wanting to charge me $85 to perform a diagnostic on it, which seems like a rip-off to me as I'm getting ready to have them put on front rotors and have my plugs done. I thought it could be a thermostat problem, but just curious if anyone has had a similar issue and what the market rate is to get the problem fixed.

How is the coolant level in the degas bottle with engine off and at ambient? If not at the top of the COLD FULL RANGE, you will first want to get it there.

Coolant level. Mine was doing the same thing. Checked the reservoir when it was cold and it was a bit low. I filled it to the line and it works fine now. Also check your owners manual to see what coolant. Mine is a 2010 and it said Ford green. You might be orange.

If you are low on coolant and you have 110,000 miles on the original water pump, check (double check) that your pump is not leaking and that your pump bearing is not failing. You may see signs of coolant leaking out from the front of the water pump, right behind the alternator, from the weep hole. Also, you may hear rattling sound from under the timing cover while the engine is running which may be the sound of the water pump about to go.

On a separate note if you drained and refilled your coolant, it can be challenging to purge all the air from the system. Ford has a special procedure with revving the engine and then shutting it down to help, or you can try to use a vacuum tool on the cooling system to fill it up and to purge most/all air from the get go.

Good luck.
