As some of you may know i purchased Sho Amo's beautiful ported and painted heads. With mine on 160k+ on the originals and no love for them other than fresh plug well seals i figured it was a good buy.
But this being my first swap i have no idea what all i need to pick up before i start. I understand the Head bolts are re use able? What is the torque pattern i should follow and what ft-lb should i tighten too? and does it need to be done in two stages?
From my understanding the heads have fresh seals and such (Feel free to correct my Sho Amo if im wrong) is there any other gaskets/seals i need to pick up other than just Head gaskets? What brand head gaskets is everyone using? Anything wrong with Victor Reinz for 51$ on rock auto?
Should i replace the valve guides with the bronze ones if they havent done so and are worn out?
I will need new o-rings for injectors is there anything else that should be done in that area while im in there?
Exhaust gaskets or anything weird with the the manifolds i need to know about?

Anything else i should do while im in there?

Ive read a couple walk troughs on the forum of what other people have done and saved a bunch of them and will be using them a lot!

I plan on getting my LPM tunned after i get this swap finished because im already noticing the need for a tune with mods ive done already, and with these ported heads im guessing im really going to need it. Should i mention to SHOsource that these heads are ported or have anything special done for the tune?

My apologies for the million questions just dont wanna get done there and get stuck or put it all back together and have forgotten to do something and have to do it all over again!

Thanks :thankyou:

When the rear head off is the perfect time to replace your power steering pump if it's leaking at all. Or if you're afraid it might leak :) Knock sensor is also easier to get to now than it ever will be, though they really don't tend to go bad (at least, not that I've seen).

Head bolt torque is definitely two stage. Values are in the Helms, which is at home right now. You should invest in a Helms if you can find one, as it'll have these figures and the instructions on timing the cams after installation.

Exhaust and intake gaskets are reusable as long as you don't bang them up too badly.

cyl head torque pattern is the standard X of the inner 4, then X of the outer 4.

torque all 8 to 36-51 lb-ft, then torque to 62-69 lb-ft

valve guides are rarely worn significantly, in my experience, so I would not worry about that.

If you can afford it, that is a good time to do at least an upper 60k, and the front 60k if you have time.

Someone here has a link to the SHO-Engine book, it has all of the torque values you will ever need.

Check out My head swap

I took lots of pics and tried to document everything as I did it.

As you remove things, bolts, etc, put them in plastic bags. Label wires if you have to, all of this helps to make a pretty efficient re-assembly process and you aren't hunting around for the correct "bolts".

From what ive been told the new heads have had an upper 60k has been done. Valve lash is in check and such. Ive put new crank and cam sensors in over past 8 months as well as new timing belt. When i did the crank and belt the water pump was dry.

I'll be sure and look for that.

Ive got your printed and saved! LOL!

Good idea, i always take lots of photos of thing as i take it apart so i know how it goes back together.
