The radio in my 1990 occasionally will not come on when you start the car. After driving a while, sometimes it will just start playing, sometimes it won't come on at all.

Once it comes on, it works fine and doesn't go off until you turn off the key, except the cassette player has started to eat tapes. It seems like the colder it is, the longer it takes to come on. But then I started it a little while ago (outside temp was 28 degrees), and it came right on.

There doesn't seem to be any logic or pattern to it at all, which of course makes it hard to even take a guess at what's wrong.

Anyone ever had this happen, or have any idea what to do?

I would just replace it. Soundlike alot of issues. You can replace it in 1 hr or possibly spend hours fixing the issues and you have no gurantees.

Just what I would do.

Bearly caught this while looking up another problem with my radio.

I have this problem too, but it doesn't bother me anymore. What it is for me, the contacts inside the ignition somehow do not touch to trigger the relay behind the glove box [at least that where I here mine click when the radio kicks on]. I can't recall what else it causes not to work, but you can kind of wiggle the key after you have the car started and it will make contact, resulting in the radio working.

Hope this helps and is what your problem is.
