Hey guys I just installed mine and it went pretty well. After removing the speedo cable and the steering coloum shroud it went pretty well. However, after replacing the dash and testing everything out I notice the tach is not working correctly. At idle it doesn't read at all and when I step on the gas and rev it up it shoots way above the actual rpm's. Any ideas??

This might not apply to the SHO, since ive never taken off the gauge cluster. But i had a similar problem on my friends 02 Celica. The gauges worked fine, and the tach was ok, but the speedometer needle wouldnt move until we hit 35 mph, then it shot straight up to 100 and stayed there till we slowed down.

The problem here was that when he put the cluster back together, he only used 2 screws to hold the cluster together while he tested it. Well apparently something wasnt making a good ground, causing the needle response to glitch and act all weird.

So... im not sure if its the same thing. but its a suggestion.
i was thinking of getting the reverse gauges for mine, post some pics of yours and post what happens.

It also could be that the needle is touching or rubbing on the gauge insert, making it stick at the bottom position until there's enough force to break it loose. I would disassemble and make sure it's not touching, and maybe use a few drops of superglue to hold the insert flush against the old gauge face & centered with the needle.

It is not sticking, the gauge moves freely. Is there something I need to do to reset the Tachometer, I think I have read something about it before but I cannot find it under the search.

Thanks all, Jason

I really would look closer if it moves free or not. Also, you could check the plugs in back. You didnt remove your needles to install them, did you? I had this problem with mine, I ended up having to "mod" the bottom of the needle a bit, where it goes onto the cluster, so it wouldnt bottom out on it.. Take the plastic film off, and VERY lightly move the needle, it is likely to get snagged.

no. I slipped the new plastic over the needle. I just checked it again, pulled off the cover and moved the needle with my finger and it does not rub at all. Neither does the speedo needle.

Then no you do not need to reset it. You might want to move it around a little bit them. You may not be able to notice if it is rubbing because the guage is very sensitive, so it doesnt take much to stop it. Also the tach is electrical so you might wan to check its connections.

I know the needle is not rubbing because I was able to get out on the highway today and drive it. At idle the needle is at 0. When I start to drive and get to about 1800-2200RPM it then jumps to 6K. If it was rubbing it would not read above its normal RPM. I have checked the connections in the back and all seem tight. I ran it to the redline (at least where the injectors start to cut out) because another member said that may reset it but no luck. After I slow back down the tach drops back to 0. Now it is sitting in my driveway with the Neg battery disconnected. I may go back out later tonight and hook it back up to check.

I also checked the DIS and it is nice and tight (it was never touched anyway).

I am hoping one of you has the fix for this as it is driving me nuts

Thanks all, Jason

Think of it like this.. If it is getting caught up on the bottom, once it finally does get past the part its caught on, it will have a LOT of oomph behind it, therefore would shoot up to 6K perhaps.. Like a Rubberband, because it has pressure on it, and then it finally gets enough to get past what its caught on... I almost gaurantee thats what it is, I had the SAME problem with mine, and taking that outer plastic off is pretty quick... You're overlooking the most simple thing.. It was fine before gauges, and not fine after.. nothing changed in the cars system...

Thanks for all of your replies guys. The needle was/is not rubbing anything for those of you who insisted that was the case. After removing the gauges again I am going to try a new gauge cluster, anyone got one laying around. I am going to go to the bone yard tomorrow and look for a tach.

Does anyone know how to test the leads in the back of the cluster, and what readings should I get?

Thanks all
Jason

did you take the halo face off and then run the car again to see how the guage acts?

yes and it still is not working properly. I also checked the signal comming from the wire harness and it seems to be working properly. Does anyone know what the current should be at idle?

Thanks, Jason

Got the new tach installed in my cluster and it works great. I had to take apart both clusters and swap the tachs out. The old tach seems to be missing one of the metal mounting pins in the back, that was the only thing I could see that might have been the problem. The red superbright LED's make the needles nice and bright and the UV superbright lights up the odometer like it is glowing. Looks great. I will post some pics once the dash is back together.

Thanks all for your input.
