Ok, I just got a new starter, thanks to Pep Boys, now when I start it, when it rev's up to 1600 or so and idles down, it makes a terrible grinding noise...I'm gonna take it back there soon, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a quick fix, or what the problem is. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the pinion gear on the starter shaft is not retracting completely clear of the flywheel after the starter is disengaged. That would be a problem with the starter. Either it is not functioning properly or it is not the correct starter for the SHO application.

And tell them you'll you'll be sending the bill for your new flywheel. I'd say it sounds like the starter's "gear," as scott said is not retracting. This really Chews up your flywheel, and therefore any starter you replace this one with also be chewed up in short order.

is it engaging well after the car starts? I had a problem with my starter where the signal wire was striped bare and making contact with the positive terminal. causing it to engage.

cruise control on the highway doing 80 MPH and the starter engages.. boy did that suck.

Went through two starters before I found the damn problem, and the flywheel is actually OK, the starter gears are pretty soft..
