Hey guys lately i have noticed that sometime when i drive the car i hear this grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from on of the rear wheels. It doesnt do it all the time but it does stop as soon as i touch the brakes. I thought maybe wheel bearing but i heard that would do it all the time and mine will quit if i touch the brakes even a little. it is hard to diagnose the exact location beacuse i am in the car when it does it. Also the noise can be very quiet but then other times it is really loud and i just dont know where to start. Please any help would be greatly appreciated and if u need more info to help u let me know. thanks

Start by removing the suspected wheel. There is a possibility that the pads are worn down to the backing plate. Inspect the rotor surface (should be shiny and smooth).

I had all the pads ant rotors done about 4 months ago and the problem started about 2 months ago. i have checked the pads and rotors and they are good. The reason i had all the pads ant rotors done was because a caliper locked up and burned the pad off one of the rear brakes. But it didnt even make that noise when the caliper was locked up. This is like a metal on metal grind. Any ideas now? thanks for the quick response.

Sounds like you may have a stuck caliper of frozen pins even a sticking parking brake. Your pads could be worn out now and making this noise. This could also lower your gas mileage as indicated in your other thread.

I had a shop do the caliper so idk if they did or not :( what would be the problem with them? By the way no one thinks this could be the wheel bearing right? i just want to eliminate that from my list of options if u guys dont think that is what it is. By the way do any of u know where i can get a repair manual like the haynes of chiltons repair manuals. I cant seem to find one for a SHO anywhere. the normal taurus's i can but not the SHO. thanks again

The Chilton's I have covers SHO stuff as well - so if it says Taurus of the appropriate year then get it. Although I think I'd prefer a Haynes if I buy another one.

I dont' have any expereince with bad wheel bearings, but I'd be guessing if it goes away when you tap your brakes, then it's quite possibly a brake issue.
The flexable hoses that go to the rear caliper seem to fail at around 8-10 years old. They can collapse internally and hold pressure to the calipers, and still look just fine from the outside. ~$50 should do both sides.

Although when I had the same issue, it wasn't a grinding noise at all. Just a high pitched whine.
