So I just got the car back from the body shop, all fixed up. Today I drive it around fine, then I decide to do some more than spirited driving on the highway...after I come off of the highway...it has a knock. Plus the oil pressure light flickers while it's at idle.

It seems that the rod bearings are f-cked, so any other ideas? I only drove it about 5 miles home and that's it...but the knock starts around 2000rpm and all the way up to like 5000rpm, and when you let off you can't hear it as much. It flickers like a real SOB at idle too...

I dont suppose you checked the oil after the accident did you? Whatever has caused this was sudden because i never had the oil light come on unless the car was stalled or not started yet. It sounds like to me something either got into the oil or there was a lack of oil. I agree with Josh, dont drive it anymore! Id get some bearings and throw them in, at least make sure thats what it is. When you slide across the curb did anything happen to the oil pan or the underneath?

Edit: it also just occured to me with the above post that the oil filter was in a vulnerable place. Id be wondering if that suckers got any oil in it.

Edit somemore, isnt there an oil cooler up in the bumper region too? In fact it was in the drivers side corner if i remember right.

Bring it over Brett...we'll fix that! $67 for the kit, if RCM still has it in stock. You take off the y-pipe and starter, then I'll do the rest.

Stock SHOs don't have external oil coolers. You may be thinking of the power steering cooler.

Whats located beneath the filter?

Im not sure what it is called, but it is indeed a type of oil cooler. Cool engine coolant flows thru the housing that the filter mounts too. Keeps the filter cool, and in turn, cools the oil.

Son of a *****. I busted my *** yesterday fixing that car...I got a new headlight bulb for it, fog light bulbs, aimed both lights, mounted the speakers correctly, fixed that bent control arm, and cleaned it and this is what it does lol.

The oil level was fine, I just changed the oil the DAY of the accident too, so it had like 20 miles on new Castrol GTX 10W-30 and an FL400-S filter. The filter survived the accident, as well as the oil pan, I checked that out when I got in the wreck...it wasn't bad enough to push the front of the car in that much towards the engine.

I guess I'll beg for $67 or something and get the bearing kit.

That's the oil warmer. The coolant reaches operating temp before the oil does. It does help keep the oil and water close to the same temp, to a degree, so it can act as a cooler too. I think the more proper term for that thing is an oil-water heat exchanger, since the heat can flow both ways.

greenbeanmtx was asking about something below the bumper, which I thought would most likely be the ps cooler.

Make sure it's the bearings before you spend the additional bux. There are a lot of things on the SHO that can make a knock sound.

I guess its hard to remember but when all that happened did you spin around backwards with it in gear? Is it possible the motor could have been over spun by the momentum of all of that going on? I know if the nascar guys spin around backwards with it in gear that will tear up the motor. On some of the high speed autocrosses i attended with my first rx7 and my vette it happened to a couple guys with manual transmissions. If i recall correctly it spins the motor backwards when that happens but it seems that since ive gone back to rotaries my mind has gone to h e double hockey sticks so i might be completely wrong.

I had my foot on the clutch and my other one slamming the brakes...The engine was still running whenever I spun back around, and I just put it in first and limped it to where it got towed from.

Yes it used to be in the O and R on the gauge when I bought it, with the new radiator and stuff it is below the middle of the gauge...consistently.

Brian is coming over tonight I think and we are going to take my good rod bearings and some of his good rod bearings from his 93, combine them and put those in. It isn't the best option, but I can't wait on an order to come in for new ones...the car has to be driveable when I leave for the Army Tuesday night so someone can drive it every couple of weeks to keep it running. If I leave it with bad bearings, then no one can drive it, which will lead to a dead battery, bad seals, bad tires, and who knows what else.

call Tony....he keeps rod bearings in stock. maybe he can hook you up. I think its a bad idea to put in used bearings.

Its like turning your underwear inside out.....still dirty.
