Governor?

Maybe this has been done before here. I was puzzled when my dealer told me the 2013 SHO couldn’t go faster than 133 MPH despite the higher number on the speedometer face. Ford had installed a governor to prevent higher speeds. I haven’t tried it yet (and probably won’t) but it seems a shame that I can’t use all that the engine provides. The dealer and others I’ve met say the suspension could handle it but the operator would find a gradual barrier. What’s the current thinking on this? Thanks.

Yep, just need a tune to disable it and add more power to continue to accelerate past those speeds

Thanks for the tips guys. Out of curiosity, would a dealer’s shop do this or are they restricted from such over-rides?

No dealer shop will tune outside of oem that I am aware of. There are several tuners recommended on the forum that have some experience

Just a simple plug and plug tune really wakes up the car and helps drive ability and increases mpg when cruising. If you only did one thing for performance on the car, a tune is best thing to do and its where all the mods start

The only exception is a ford performance tune. Boss mustang had a red key. That was oem supported I think? But I'm not sure if "ALL" dealerships will do that. And the SHO doesn't have a ford performance tune.

Then the next step would be a Roush tune, but then warranty is a different subject all together.

Good consideration. I’m out of all warranties, even the extended ones. All expenses are mine to bear. So if I had an independent do a specialty tune I wouldn’t be exposing myself to loss of benefit. However, the competent tech at the new dealership I tried in May warned that modifications I did thru an independent might not be reversible. And they wouldn’t show up on my Ford service history. That limitation might prevent proper Ford service going forward. Yes, of course some big guy scare tactic but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Folks, thanks to this conversation I’m going to bring the matter to the new dealership’s shop next week. See how they respond to my out-of-warranty caveat, that all vehicle liabilities are mine to bear, as long as their work is competent. You’ve given me enough detail to raise the level of exchange, just as you did with my first visit to them. Set the bar high. Let’s see what happens.

I did hear back from the Charlottesville VA dealer service manager. As was suggested here, his shop won’t do the mod. In fact none of the other manufacturers of his experience would do it. Not just for the company standards but also out of concern for the unexpected damaging consequences. He noted that just yesterday another customer raised the same question. We all want the most from our hobby vehicles!

A car-savvy buddy added the issue of losing what I enjoy now, such as fuel economy, emissions and brakes. I get pretty good MPG now on my long hauls. Wouldn’t want to sacrifice that for some glory of the occasional lightning. Members on this forum race these cars. Not me. I drive cross-country in luxury.

I dont think so. Maybe possible, but probably not. There is still things being found on forscan all the time with changes

To my knowledge the vehicle hasn’t had a tune since purchase. I’ve heard that SHO’s hold their tune very well. I’m passed 80,000 miles now. Most of my driving is on the highway, at speed limit plus. I use premium gas every 4th tankful. My plugs should be relatively clean. When should I expect to do a prudent tune?

IF modifications are done this will likely void any warranty you may have. It's not always the case but it is grounds to deny it. If you want to tune for performance then you will likely need to use higher octane as an everyday fuel. IF you enjoy the car as it is then I wouldn't touch it and keep a Ford extended warranty on it just in case. There are factory ex warranty discount sellers online. Don't worry, it's a SHO, it will cost you money sooner or later. Keep the driveline fluids changed

Just so I’ll learn as much as I can from this thread, what do you consider “driveline fluids” here. I’ve had the car serviced by a Ford/Lincoln dealer throughout its 80,000+ miles. Done the benchmarks maintenances too. Should I be OK in what you suggest? Thanks.

transmission, ptu, rear differential. PTU is/was listed as lifetime fluid. This is not correct as it is subject to high amounts of heat that degrade this fluid, cause it to breakdown and coagulate and lead to frequent ptu failure
