After driving for just a short period of time, my CEL displays and continues to do so until I turn the car off. It does disappear when I start the car back up. Only on the rare occasion when I'm driving up a hill from a stop does the car feel like it is bogging down and sluggish in getting up to speed. I just performed an EEC test a few minutes ago.

Here are the codes:

ON:
136: HEGO Sensor indicates lean condition, cylinder bank #2 (1991 on)
538: Operator error during test (need to re-run the test)

OFF:
111: We have 6 cylinders
176: HEGO Sensor indicates lean condition, cylinder bank #2 (1990 on)
542: Fuel Pump circuit open, ECA to pump motor ground (1990 on)

My father and I are thinking that the fuel pump may be failing or is on its way out. Also, could an O-2 sensor be causing the lean condition in the cylinder bank?

Any help and/or suggestions with fixing these problems is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Mike

yeah, o2 sensors fail lean...I'd also just do a good check of your vaccum lines and make sure that you don't have any broken/cracked vaccum lines. Can of carb cleaner does wonders...

the other thing I'd consider replacing the fuel pump as you're of the age which those things fail. What is the fuel level in the tank when you are experiencing the "bogging" condition? you could be experiencing a fuel starvation issue...

thing to remember is that when you're going up that hill you're under a heavy engine load, so if anything is weak or failing with your fuel supply or vaccum system, it's going to be magnified. So if you have a dirty/failing a/f sensor, or if your fpr is weak/ruptured, it's going to really start showing it's face in those conditions. So I wouldn't ignore this as this might be your only warning sign before something fails completely leaving you stranded.

A 542 just means that you've stalled the car out. Any time you do so, that code gets set. It probably couldn't hurt to change the pump too, though.

542 is from stall and circuit staying open to fuel pump a second or so after the engine stops(wouldn't worry about it), if you are, un plug the battery for a while, connect it again and see if it throws it again

136 / 176 - the same just one is running one is not, both are for the front O2 sensor.

538 - your fault, you should be driving the car
seriously though, it just didn't register the throttle goose or you forgot

I had the same problem on my car, replace the front O2 sensor. you can't miss it, it will poke you in the eye when you slide under the car. :p

I would replace both O2 sensor as they usually last about the same length of time.

And to repeat what was stated, going up a hill you are under a lot of load, especially from a stop. I haven't driven the car, so I don't really know what it feels like, but from the sounds of it, try the O2 first and clear all the codes $40.
