Are 9007 PIAA bulbs worth the high price? I have PIAA fog lights on my 94 SHO and they are great! Any ideas on what to buy that work with existing wiring and everything else?:thankyou:

Slyvania Silverstars are what i'm running. I can actually see at night, and in the rain.

Im using the high end piaa headlight bulbs right now and they work great. first off though you cant expect a difference if your headlight glass is pitted/yellowed. check out my post in the product reviews for the permatex plastic lens refinishing kit i have pics of my setup there.

I paid $35 for the Sylvania Silverstars. Big difference compared to the Cool Blue. As far as the fog lights on the GEN 2's are concerned there worthless. I thought about buying Silverstar foglight bulbs, but I don't think there worth $18/per.

The gen2 headlights work great if:

You use an upgraded wiring harness kit such as the one at www.suvlights.com

You run a decent bulb such as the GE Nighthawk or Sylvania Xtravisions. I don't like the US Silverstars.

You have new headlight housings.

Get housings and a harness first.

Do a google search for Daniel Stern and do some reading about headlights. Herman Anker's FAQ is also pretty good.

PIAAs are way overpriced when compared to the SilverStars. I paid ~$25 for a pair of the SS Ultras and are every bit as good or better than the PIAAs I had before.

x2 My piaa bulbs did last like 4 years before one took a dump. I replaced them with the ss ultra much better light color less blue more white = better light to see and not hit a deer:)

+1 for the SS Ultras. They definitly put the light out, and just check ebay. I gut mine for ~$22 shipped. Most that a listed as a auction format, not Buy It Now, are returned merchandise, and usually unopened. There are quite a few listings on there.

Having a good set of clean and clear lens' makes a huge difference. mine are somewhat cloudy, but I've got a permatex kit waiting to be used.

Some will argue that the SS Ultras don't last as long as some of the other Sylvania bulbs, I've only had mine in for ~3 months, so will tell.

as 362104 said, there is a big difference in the Cool Blues and the Ultras. I have had both, and the Ultras have much greater intensity and range, which comes with the price. Neiter have the BMW HID blue look, but what can you expect for less than $50.

I would hope that a halogen bulb would not have a blue HID look. The blue look from HID's is a byproduct of the xenon gas igniting which isn't the light that's focused on the road. A blue tinted bulb will cancel out some of the yellow output to create whiter light but whiter light is not equivalent to more light. In fact the opposite is usually true. A really heavily tinted bulb just creates a blue look to replicate the HID "look". Neither setup is beneficial unless you're just interested in how your car looks going down the road at night.

The Sylvania Xtravisions are $22 a pair. Spend the rest of your money on a harness to get more power to those bulbs and new housings with clear lenses.

The Ultras are suppose to last longer than the regular SS. Their actual light output is very white and a bit better when the road is wet.

Has anyone tried a HID upgrade kit? BIG downside is it looks like you lose the high-beam in the 9007 conversion? HID's only draw 3-4 amps.

I also found this informative, maybe biased but informative nonetheless: http://www.candlepowerinc.com/pdfs/Illegal_Overwattage.pdf

The ballasts draw a huge amp load upon startup. IMO, ballasts should only be used with a harness and relays. Keep in mind that the stock housings were never designed for HID's. Therefore the reflectors and lenses will throw out all sorts of weird and often blinding colors. I did see a rebased HID 9007 kit on a 92. It wasn't horrible but it was no better than my 93 with Xtravision bulbs, a harness and new housings. I was all about doing a proper HID projector retrofit and I got somewhat far with it. However, there really isn't a need for it with the new housings and a harness.

Exactly. The stock housings work excellent with good housings that are aimed right with good bulbs (not tinted blue) and an aftermarket harness.

You guys paying outrageous prices for expensive bulbs and HID kits are wasting your money.

I got some Silverstars from. www.powerbulbs.com it in the UK they were 30 shipped for the pair. And these come un tinted. They work very well.

I bought silverstars for my girlfriend from that site last year. I remember trying to find a 9007 Euro spec Silverstar and coming up with nothing. Did you order a 9007 or is there an equivalent bulb with a different name?
