Ghost Cam

We've had a few people asking about the ghost cam lately on different platforms, so I figured I would share a video for what we have done by utilizing the factory VCT to achieve the "correct" lope idle. Some other tuners have done this through excessive fueling and flooding the system, but we've been able to use minimal fueling and proper VCT to create the valve overlap needed to create the "chop" sound.

Video car is a 2012 Taurus SHO with cat delete and full exhaust.

Hi Lee, you guys loaded this up on one of my tunes and I liked the sound, but it makes my car shudder violently. It’s obnoxious... Is the shudder a normal by product of using this or could something be wrong?

oh, and before someone says it, I know a cammed car shakes... I had a 383 Stroker Camaro build back in the day...

should not have a shudder at all, should drive completely stock. I'd double check engine and transmission mounts to see if the engine is getting excessive movement.

We have a softer lope that is cat friendly. And I'm sure it hurts the ozone less than a cow fart

This is just a modification to the idle characteristics through variable cam timing. As soon as you touch the gas pedal it reverts back to our performance tune.

is there any sure fire way to check this? I’ve had a couple of other oddities steering me to this conclusion also...

Well, is there more to it than that? My understanding is your throwing a lot more fuel into the mix and unburnt fuel is passing into the exhaust and if you have cats, this can be catastrophic to the cats, correct?

if you are doing it the lazy way, yes. Our ghost cam is done entirely through VCT manipulation, the only fuel added is what is demanded by the VCT settings.

One of the bad misconceptions with the ghost cam that we saw in the Mustang world (we were the second tuner to develop the Ghost Cam for the Coyote Engine in 2011) was that several tuners achieved it by dumping so much fuel that it literally created a misfire at idle. This is NOT the right way to do it.

I can't go into specifics since we are the only SHO tuner acheiving it through VCT manipulation, but ours is cat safe, and we have Mustang customers that have daily driven it for years without damage to the cats.
