Weird whine happening when I turn the wheel.. Sounds like power steering pump or something. Had it a while back & had the fluid changed and it went away. Now its back again. Should I just keep changing the fluid? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks

Well, if changing the fluid worked once, then likely that is where the problem is at, so it cannot hurt to change it again, but if it has returned quickly, then it sounds like the pump itself is in trouble and replacement is in your future.

Sounds like a flow issue. Check to make sure the hose hasn't got soft and is collapsing. Had mine collapse the other day. Other option is you have a leak on the suction line and you getting air into the system.

check the fluid level and if its low add the same type of fluid that you had put in it a while back. if it does it later on and the level is low take it to a mechanic before its to late because it has a leak.

All good points. I will bring it somewhere decent to have the fluid changed and have him check the other things listed above & the surrounding lines...

Use Mobil One ATF this time. You may be able to buy some time that way. It is good stuff and highly recommended for our PS systems.

No need to flush it. If you put a drop of your old fluid on a paper towel and then a drop of clean ATF next too it you will see how dirty it is. If the fluid is black then the internals are all coated in the same black carbon.

If you flush and add a aggressively detergent ATF like a synthetic you will have dirty fluid again in a month. Just use a turkey baster and suck down the reservoir, refill with cheap ATF and monitor the dirt in it every week or so. Keep doing this until the cheap fluid stays clean. Then do the same with synthetic. After a quart or so you will have 95% clean synthetic in a clean system.

Then once a year just suck down the reservoir and top off with synthetic ATF.

So its ok to end up with a mixture of ATF and PS fluid?

Is that maybe why it came back so quick? Maybe the shop used regular PS fluid...

Would I have to drain the old for that? Or can I do like mentioned above & just turkey baster some out & replace it with the conditioner?

Added some ATF Conditioner and it seems 100% so far. The fluid was low when I added it, so I must have a small leak somewhere. But it wasnt that bad.. So I guess it was just low. I will keep an eye on it & hopefully be ok...

I would guess either a leak or there was air in the line and has finally worked it's way out. That would have left you with a low level.
