ok so it's a 1992 with 200000 ish km on it, im trying to get the A/C / Alternator belt off to get the A/C compressor off. I figured it was just a case of loosening the allen/hex nut that was above the (tensioning?) pulley. (the one kind of above the crank) so i began loosening the nut and just kept loosening and nothing was happening. i was fully expecting the pulley to move up along the apparent track but to no avail. So now what?

You have to loosen the nut holding the idler pully to the brkt before the pully will move! It is a 5mm allen & that should not have been able to turn so you could have stripped/broken somthing. Usually you strip out the allen first if do not loosen the nut on the pully first or break the 'C'clip!

YES, you HAVE to loosen the pulley nut for it to move up and down! The nut on the stud locks the pully assy in place to hold belt tension. This stud has another nut on it inside the brkt that the adjustment screw passes through. If after loosening the pully nut & the screw will not move the pully assy the screw is rusty or stripped. You must then remove comp assy brkt off motor & repair or replace. MTX frt & rear assys are unique. Also be carefull with the washer behind the nut as it can only work 1 way! If you put it on backwards it will bind the pressed in bearing!
