So im buying my dads 96' sho off of him for the cost of the cam weld job. It already has new tires, brakes, motormounts, plugs, rotated packs..i think thats it...but what else should i look for, or do as far as preventative maintaince. I've had a 90' and a 92' but im not too caught up on these v8s.

flush the tranny and add a HD cooler

Remember that with any used car, approach maintience like NOTHING has been done. Drain the fluids and put new stuff in, do the tune up etc etc.

That way you KNOW it was done and done correctly

Then the tranny is 5K miles overdue for a flush anyway (the factory interval is 30K, but the fluid is pretty nasty by 20K, so that's when it should really be changed).

Sure, just let us know when you make the appt, and whether you want conventional or synthetic.

Can rebuilt transmissions accept synthetic after being filled with Mercon?

Would that require complete flush to use synthetic?
Synthetic ATF is completely compatible with conventional ATF, so you can mix them, or flush the system and replace one with the other no problem. We usually recommend running conventional for the first ~5000 miles on a rebuilt though before switching to synthetic.

I think that depnds on who you ask.... Most don't seem to think it cares, and some others (like me) are in the "it's not broke" camp and may just not extend the service interval out to the full 30K the manual calls for for stock fluid. I personally don't like changing fluid types in an automatic transmission ever. while viscosity and sheer strength specs may be compatible, there are all the additives that are certainly different at some level (anti-foaming agents and detergents are the biggies). If the tranny works with one, why expose the seals in the system to a different type?

It doesn't matter if you are just repalcing existing fluid with the same stuff (except new of course) or changing types I would ALWAYS flush, it really isn't that hard.
