I tried this and it was no-go. The long plug (which provides power to the units, lights, etc.) worked fine, the wiring harness between the AM/FM cassette and CD player worked fine. But no sound. The plug that leads to the amp must be wired differently for Gen I and Gen II.

I haven't found any information on how the wiring differs, so I can't figure out if I can rewire that plug.

I believe that Gen II had two amps, and Gen I only one, but I'm guessing.

In addition, despite the fact that the units slide right in to the Gen I DIN holes, they don't go in far enough to engage the retainer clips on the sides. Every hard launch (and many hard turns) deposited the units onto the console.

Maybe someone else can help solve this problem.

Best of luck.

Anyone ever figure this out? I've seen a Gen 1 with a Gen 2 type radio. Also, I realized I have my stock head unit from my old 93. I thought it was bad (found out it wasn't)...my friend had a 92 LX at the time and got an aftermarket unit, so he gave me his stock radio. I put his in my SHO when I sold it, and I found out later mine was still good.

I wanna hang onto it in case I get a Gen I....I'd like to stick that one in there to keep the stock look; then maybe wire in an aftermarket amp (a small 225watt max or something) and 1 10" sub. Is this a major ordeal to accomplish?

the only difference as jelloslug stated before is the radios the gen1 is 12v and the gen2 is 5v, so you will also have to switch the black jbl amp from gen 1 to gen 2, and it will work fine.

Sweet, doesn't sound too bad. I wonder if I could put that stock unit in and wire in a good aftermarket amp and 10" sub.

Holy old thread batman. There are 2 things that stop you from using a 2nd gen radio in a 1st gen car:
1) The divider bar on the dash (can be fixed with a Dremel)
2) The amp turn on lead for a 1st gen is 12 v and on the 2nd gen it's 5 volts. Just swap out the black JBL amp with a 2nd gen one and every thin will work just fine.

yes you can they make a harness that plugs into the stock amp wiring in back to support an after market amp, scosche sales them I believe. I can tell you the grey cable going from the headunit back to the amp, all that is is speaker wires ,there is 8 wires in there 2 for each speaker. The other part of the harness that plugs into the main amp also has the remote wire, power, and ground, and speaker outputs(dark blue-remote) yellow-power, red-ground.

The 90 I looked at the other day that greenbean bought had a Gen 2 Lincoln head unit (same as the Ford but had the Lincoln symbol on the tape door). The LED display was the same green color as the EATC so it matched. I was wondering how the guy got it to work in his but I guess he did what you stated above.

My old 93 head unit laying around has the bluish green LED (which I like better) but would not go with the 90-91 green LED color combination. I'd love to learn more about cars and automotive electrical but I'm just not that sharp with those kind of things. I've been looking at that 90 on the trader that needs a radio...that's why I'm asking this question.

Oh yeah...jelloslug, I've seen pics of your SHO's interior including the head unit/CD player. It looks top notch! I love it! From reading your posts on here, you're pretty good at electronics. Are you by chance an electrical engineer?

Thanks man, I bookmarked that site. It's like reading Greek at this point, but I love learing about cars, especially the SHOs. I've just never been the mechanically inclined type but I have a big interest in cars. I do what I can, but certain things I have to leave to others.

Thanks, I'm not an electrical engineer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night......

But I am a mechanical engineer.
