I had searched on sources for a replacement antenna mast for the power antenna in my 1991 SHO and located the following helpful antenna topic. Unfortunately, this topic did not discuss the correct replacement mast for the Gen I SHOs. I went out on a limb and ordered the Metra 44-PWRFD260 from laynlow1 on eBay an was pleased with the price and the service.

To prepare for the installation of the new mast section, I had to remove the tire/wheel and fender splash shield to allow removal of the antenna drive unit from the fender. I had to open the antenna drive to remove the broken section of the mast from the drive unit. This was a simple job.

Upon opening the package and comparing the new mast with the non-working old mast I had removed from the top of the mount, I found the old mast to be of a larger diameter than the new, Gen II mast. The only portion of the old antenna that had failed was the plastic gear strip. Could I use the new gear strip on the old antenna?

I removed the 7mm nut from the top of the thinnest section of the old antenna (hold the solid, top section of the mast with Vise-Grips or Channel-Locks and twist the nut with 1/4" drive and 7mm socket wrench) and found that the top section of the mast could be removed from the bottom of the mast. I did this for the new mast also to see very similar mast sections with the plastic gear strip coupled to the bottom of the top mast section.

I merely removed the two loose brass spacers from the new mast's top section and slid the new mast up inside the old antenna. Once the threaded section protruded out the top, I tightened the new mast's 7mm nut on the thin, solid mast section.

I could now install the old antenna with the new top section and plastic gear strip in the top of the fender mount and press the DOWN button to draw the new plastic gear strip in to the drive gear. The threaded section of the gear strip must be facing forward in the car to allow the gear to engage the strip. My manual UP/DOWN switches allowed me to engage the gear strip and pull the new antenna strip into the drive unit. Once the antenna was bottomed out, I used the 9/16" deep socket to tighten the mounting nut and secure the mast into the drive unit.

I then used the outer, chrome fitting as a template to cut a new gasket from bulk gasket material to replace the dry, broken old spacer that was betwen the fender and the chrome fitting. I used the tips of needle nose pliers to engage the slots in the bushing to tighten it into the chrome fitting and complete the mast repair.

There should be a proper replacement mast for the Gen I SHOs and I bet that anybody searching through this topic would be appreciative to know the manufacturer and part number. If you know the correct Gen I replacement mast, please reply to this topic. Thanks to those in the reference topic link above for helping me to get my antenna working again.

Now to replace the old Kenwood head unit and 6 disc CD changer....

Thanks for the write-up Scott! :thumb: Mine is well overdue for a replacement.
Im getting tired of 'helping' the mast extend and retract by pushing and pulling on it as my wife hits the button
