So I got as a matched set the powdercoated 120amp alternator for the Gen 1 & the Gen 2 mini-torq starter from a vendor on eBay - CSKING. Great products, fast delivery (yeah, I know, in the Vendor section, yo)

I removed the solenoid completely instead of doing as the instructions said, going from solenoid to Gen 2 starter solenoid. Didn't like having yet another item to fail, and hey, that solenoid is weight (along with the extra long battery cables). So, after making new cables a la the Gen 2 battery to starter cables, and tying into the Gen 1 solenoid ignition trigger wire, what a HUGE difference. 1/4 second key turn & vroomp!, she starts right up quickly. None of this drain the battery down cranking BS.

Mark N.'s always told me the Gen 1 was a much heavier starter anyway.

Oh, and it's a GREAT feeling to have SO much room in an uncluttered engine bay that you can drop your full sized MAG Light in there & have it fall all the way to the ground. :D

Yes I've been planning on doing that for awhile now (got one sitting in the attic) but you beat me to it :) Have been waiting as I wanted to do it when I move the battery to the trunk since the cabling will be different/custom anyway.

Probably one of those little nic picky things I'll get to this winter. I have lots of little 5 and 10 lb weight parts swapping planned. Like to be ready to go April '03 at 2950 lbs :D

Hey Fred or Mark what exactly is involved with doing this mod. And is the gen 2 starter any better then the gen 1 starter? The reason being is at 90k I had to replace my starter because car would not start. The starter motor would spin, but the engine would NOT turn over. That was in May 2001. It is now september 2002 and my starter just took a crap again. Turn the key and it would just spin the starter. I am having the starter replaced as we speak so it will probably be another 1 1/2 years till I replace it again. Shouldn't starters last longer then that?!?! Huray for starters!!!

I put a Gen 2 starter on my '90 SHO a couple of months ago and love it. It does seem to crank better and it much more compact and lighter.

But I do remember posting my upgrade on this forum and got slammed by fellow SHO brother for do something so stupid he said, because of the price difference in the solenoids.

:p

Later,
Mike

Well I got my car back up and running. Unfortunately I had to pay someone to replace the starter. It was raining outside, and I don't have a garage to work in. Anyways, they said that the reason the new starter failed so quickly is because it was drenched in oil. They said it was probably an oil leak that covered it. I though I heard on hear that when changing the oil doesn't it douse the starter when you remove the filter or remove the drain plug? I don't know since I've never changed the oil myself. Is there a way to protect the starter from getting covered in oil? Let me know
