Junk Yard

Many junk yards use some sort of blunt instrument and violence to bash a big hole in the bottom of the fuel tank. Around here you just know that you'll never get two things from a junk yard: a fuel tank or a DIS.

I dunno where the DIS's go.

All the "easy-to-grab" stuff gets snagged by the processing crew . . . .

I grab DIS's all the time from the JY out here. I know several CaptialSHO members that have at least one spare. I don't know about the gas tanks though... could be right. It makes sense to not want flammable liquid all over the place.

It's a matter of "corporate think". Make as much money as you can, without regards to the outcome or cost to the environment and people - we'll push that cost off on somebody else . . . .

Basically, the larger junk yards now resell their "used gasoline" to the local oil distributors (ie. the ones that sell gasoline and diesel fuel to your local gas stations). This is despite the fact that some of these vehicles have set for months and in some cases, for years. Ethanol begins to separate-out and absorb water after roughly 30-days. And the oil distributor uses the same vehicles to "retrieve" the "used gasoline", that they use to deliver it (think about that for a moment).

In the process of "draining" the tank, they punch one-to-three 2" holes in the bottom of the tank, thereby ruining the tank and often the fuel pump. While used, you would be surprised how many people willing by a used fuel pump off the same year vehicle, to replace the one that just failed in their vehicle.

In addition to the "spillage" that occurs during the "retrieving" and post "retrieving" movement of the vehicle, the tanks sit open until the vehicles are crushed. This allows all the remaining gas in the tank to drip onto the ground and vent to the atmosphere. Ever wonder why some many areas have high contamination rates for MTBE.

I mean, why waste the time (err. money) required to properly remove the tank, drain the tank, and properly recover the gas, when you can simply let nature "fix it" . . . .
