ok.. so my car made this weird crunching noise everytime I turn the wheel... my wheel would also get stuck.. so I got my steering rack changed.. that solved the wheel sticking thing but it still makes this grinding noise everytime I turn the wheel.. what could this be due to ???

Hi Heather! Finally we meet.

At least I know what I'm in for...my wheel has been kindof sticking the last few days...only in one direction, the other way is fine.

Mine has also been making more of a groaning sound when turning rather than crunching. Perhaps there is air in there causing it not to slide properly... I'm not sure what it is but hopefully we'll find out soon.

How much of a pain was the rack change?

well.. the garage I took it to .. (my freinds husband) said it was 5 hours of labor.. he claimed it to be a real PITA.. then again.. when I opened my hood when I got there his only words were WOW!! so I dont think he has had alot of expierence with SHOs. He charged me 289 thats with a allignment too.. ohhh and also.. my wheel stuck more one way then the other.. its so nice now to have my car steer right.... next comes getting the stripped bolt in my tranny case fixed... its never ending with my car

That's one thing about the SHO...things are never-ending. On the upside, unless it's just totally falling apart there are months of enjoyment that totally outweigh the bad stuff. I love my car and I can never foresee us parting. One of these days I'd like to get a beater car to drive every day so I don't have the wear and tear on the SHO, especially in the winter months.

My steering sticks sometimes on turning left, but the right turn is fine. Really strange so I'm not sure that the rack is the answer, but it would make sense.

Too bad we live so far away...if I lived closer we could gang up on the guys for a change.

Now that winter has set in with its chilling bite, this symptom has shown up in several topics. A loud, sporadic, crunching, groaning, noise when turning the steering wheel can be caused by the upper rubber spring pad rubbing against the inside of the strut tower. It occurs more often in colder weather and especially on cars that have lowering springs that have had the upper mount of the front struts moved outboard to return the camber back into the -1 degree spec. It is not a damaging or fatal situation, but rather a distinct annoyance and embarrassment. A simple solution is to provide some lubrication to the area of interference by using some silicone grease (Sil-Glyde). I turn the wheels to each side and apply some grease to a rubber gloved fingertip. I then follow the "doctor's orders" (line from Caddyshack) and insert my finger into the tight confines of the upper region of the inside of the strut tower.
