A few months ago my steering column had developed a small squeak but forgot about it as the car sat for 3 months while I waited on replacing the steering rack. Once I started driving it again the past 2ish days it was still there and as annoying as ever so obviously not related to the rack at all.

I moved the wheel in and out and tried to see if it was position dependent, and it somewhat is but the only position it doesn't make the noise is when it is all the way to the dash. Tried turning the steering wheel and changing the position to see if maybe that would help move grease around in case it was just rubbing due to no lubrication, but at least when I was doing it there was no difference.

Is there a way to add grease and fix this (what type? never lubed a column before) or is it indicative of another issue? Steering feel doesn't seem stiff but having not driven it in 3 months, it is hard to say for certain as it is stiffer than the other car I was driving just due to it being a SHO.

Could loosening the column mount bolts and seeing if maybe it was just binding help? My steering wheel has always been offset compared to the seat and dash cutout so unsure if that was normal or if my column was just installed weird and it took a while to have noises develop.

I was having the same issue especially when cold outside but would always go away once the car is warmed up. I solved the issue by using silicone grease on the steering column. There’s a little boot you lift up and put some grease in there. It completely solved it and no more squeaking at all! Taken off your drivers side front tire and you can access pretty easily from there.

Finally found the source of the squeak and it is at least accessible which is great. The boot where the column passes through the firewall right behind the pedals is where the squeak is coming from. This post has a great video of another ford with the same issue: reddit post

So now I just need to find a way to squeeze in there and apply some grease.
