fuel pump replacement

Car has been dying last few weeks at the worst of times in t110 degree heat here in Az. It runs fine, then dies, only to run ok again in about an hour. It starts up fine in between, but idles for 5 seconds, tack registers about 300rpm, then it dies again. I was thinking it to be an intake issue with the hot as **** air...but a buddy told me to look at the fuel pump. I hear the relay click when it is keyed, the pump whines etc and i am getting pressure at the fuel rail..but i think it is weak.(tried the tire gage, did not seem to work) Anyway, i bought the new pump since this one has 90k on it, i cut the plate for the access to the pump, and now can some tell me how to relive the pressure in the lines before taking the pump out of the tank? Thanks for the help and this forum continues to be a huge help when i have problems with my car.

I didnt, I just removed it. Had a little gas but nothing major. You can remove the fuel filter and have it leak down there.

i've had a hand in replacing two different fp in the last six months and i never had any problem with the pressure on the fuel lines......just take them off carefully!

easy to unplug the electrical connection at the cut off switch in the trunk (well its tricky to get the connector off, but pretty easy way to get rid of fuel pressure), then just crank the motor over for a few seconds to clear it out a bit.

Or just whack the quarter panel next to where the cut off switch is mounted, tripping it. Just don't forget to reset it when you're done and go crazy trying to figure out why your new pump doesn't work (who, me ).
