hello all, i just bought an 89 sho and the fuel pump is dead. I read about the replacement on shotimes and looked on here at some other posts but im still a little unsure of how to do the whole thing and i dont really want to take it to a garage because of cost (anyone have a ballpark figure that shops charge?). Anyways, I was wondering if anyone around the Grand Haven, MI area would be willing to help me out in replacing it, i have all the things needed to do it just have to buy the pump and need someone's brain who knows what they are doing. I will pay you to help or we can work something out. Thanks, Andy

Replacing the fuel pump isn't that bad of a project. The hardest part is probably jacking the car up and lowering the fuel tank. Jack up the car and place it on jackstands. Loosen the fuel strap bolts, enough to disconnect the fuel pump connectors at the top of the tank. Then fully remove the fuel tank straps and pull the tank out from under the car. Then remove the fuel pump assembly. (Removing the retaining ring for the FP and such) Replace the fuel pump itself after removing it from the tank. And reassembly is reverse. Alot of people will suggest new tank straps and bolts, which is usually a good idea... on mine I stripped one of the strap bolts but it was still holding proper torque. It'll just make things easier on reassembly. http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/ offers a great pump at good prices.
I may be missing a step or two so let other chime in here.

Are you positive it is the pump and not the integrated relay module?

Or the inertia (safety cutout) switch?

You'd be pretty pi$$ed to replaced the pump only to find it was an electrical supply problem in the first place.

That's not too bad on labor charges.

But it's really not that hard to do yourself! Just be sure to drain the tank first, it makes it a lot easier!
