i started my 89 sho the other day and let it warm up and it stalled and wouldnt start again for about 30 minutes, it has happened probably 5 times since then. im thinking it could be the fuel filter cuz the car wants to start but it just seems like it cant get gas. should i try some kind of fuel system cleaner first? thanks for the help

For less than $10, I'd replace the fuel filter if it has an unknown history (age). Other than that, testing the fuel pressure at the rail will also help diagnose any flow of fuel problems.

Does the fuel pump make any noises while trying to pressurize the system? Usually a failing fuel pump is audible.

Andy,

How old is the filter? If its more than a few years old it would be a good idea to change it.

If that does not fix your problem then check the fuel pressure.

The two basics needed to get an engine to run are fuel and spark. So, check your "spark" also.

Sounds very familiar to what happened to mine when my crank sensor crapped out. Start it up, drive for a mile or so, stalled out. At first it would crank back up after about 5 or 10 minutes, then eventually go up towards 20-30 minute range before it would start back up. Cranked just as normal, except it just wouldn't run.

When you crank the car, do you have tach? Same question for when you're driving the car and it stalls, while you're still rolling does your tach work? Read here for more info.
