I have been having problems filling the tank for the last 4 fill ups. I have to hold the nozzle and run the pump very slow - not open enought to set the stop on the nozzle. Prior to this, I could set the nozzle and go clean the windshield and it would fill up at the full open setting on the nozzle.

Approx. 3 weeks ago, I came out one morning and found the fuel door unlatched. Not standing open, just unlatched.

I didn't see anything unusual and just thought I had failed to fully close it when I last gassed up. Since then, slow fills every time - two different stations, 3 different pumps/nozzles.

Does anyone know how the filler neck is made beyond the visible flap inside the filler neck? Could an attempted gas thief have bent something or left a length of garden hose in the filler neck to cause this situation?

Any help will be appreciated.

There is usually a flap at the bottom of the filler neck. If it gets damaged (by a hose / thief) it will cause that issue. Had the same thing happen on my Mustang.

Kind of sounds like something is stuck in there, impeding the flow.

My 06' Mustang GT did the same thing whenever i tried to fill the tank with the engine running in the winter months. It hasn't done it in a while, I think ford has a fuel tank backpressure problem that just has not been addressed. Try filling your tank around mid morning when its not too cool outside and make sure the engine is off. Works for me ,My Mustang has not done this for over three years since I went to this method of filling the tank.
P.S. I have yet to have this prob with my Taurus

That's why I have a lock on my Filler Neck......

Thanks Guys. I need to take it to the shop for the cooling connector recall anyway, so I guess I will have them run a fiber optic camera into the filler neck to diagnose this little problem as well.

Bob, what kind of lock do you have on yours. I don't see how a lock and be installed on a capless filler neck.

Ford offers a locking "plug" for the latest gen Taurus. The part # is 8U5Z-9C268-B or 8U5A-9C268-AC.

I have one, because I think that they help keep people honest.
