Free Turning Engine?

I'm new here, but not to SHOs. Bought my '91 Plus new and it just turned 200K. Please settle an argument I'm having with some other local SHO guys. Is or is not the 3.0 Yamaha a free turning engine? Yes, mine has had plenty of belt changes, so that's not the issue. I know what I think, but one of you guys settle it for me.

By free turning Ill assume you mean NON-interference.

That means the the valves NEVER occupy the same space as the pistons, and breaking a timing belt will do no harm.


If thats what you are asking, then your answer is yes. The V6 SHO motor is NON-interference.

Thanks much, that's indeed what I was asking, and thought that the answer was yes. Getting time for another belt but have bearings to do shortly, and that's, as you know, another story.:thankyou:

Broken timing belts are not common. And even if they break, its no big deal.

Just time for a VERY overdue front 60k service

Just to clarify, with stock cams it's not an interference engine. Not sure what aftermarket cams cause it to be an interference engine, but I know some do.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that this is also the case with the 3.2 (non-interference), but not the 3.4 - to which very bad things happen when the cam sprocket lets loose...

If memory serves, only the +40s make it interference.

to beat a dead horse; yes, the engine is non-interference.

to clarify; The timing belt does not necessarily go bad. I've heard of the 3.0 Tensioner go bad more than the belt.

I don't think I've ever seen a V6 belt snap, to be honest. Even the 16 year old belt that we pulled off of JR's old green POS still had some life left in it.

Thanks gentlemen, for all the replys. The old girl is gettin kind long in the tooth, but will still lay down the numbers, and get 19 in the city when I don't play with the 'tuners'. Still got the original diff/transmission and 120k on the second clutch. I don't abuse the ole girl, just drive her everyday. Got a GM F-body to abuse when I feel the urge. Thanks again everybody, it's good to be here, think I'm gonna love it.:woo-hoo:

And stage 2 from SHO Shop. Wiseco pistons spec'd by Josh will clear all available cams.

Snapped mine in the 89 several months ago....although I think the acc belts broke first and then the t-belt snapped. Driving down a rural road about 60+; hear a "whap whap whap" noise, a/c shuts off, hmm.....slow down and as I make a turn onto another county road "whap whap whap" again; lost power steering, then the car just shut off.....so maybe the acc belts breaking at higher RPMs with a sudden load change caused it. I have a pic of it but can't find it at the moment--will post if I can locate it. Pretty much just like YamahaSHO's.
