Doug,

Get those quotes, but hang tight and don't agree to any of them yet.

There is a local machine shop that knows the 3.8L SC in/out.

How much will it cost to tow the Bird over to the mainland?

Gene

I replied to your email.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth throwing good money after bad.

I could pull the brakes. And scrap it. Brent would be crushed but we'd be better off finacially. If I hadn't just spent $700 on the A/C I'd do it right now.

I just got off the phone with Thompson machine and was quoted $2,260. for long block assembled. if that helps.

I can't even begin to do the repairs on my own. Not my area of expertise.

The estimate came back at $6200.......

The mechanic says if you fix the top end, the bottom might go soon after.

So there is $3600 for a long block in that figure. $800 for a harmonic balancer, etc.

And we've spent probably $3,000 on the car since buying it. Just had the A/C upgraded for $700. Got those nice Cobra brakes, etc.

Brent is distraught.

I suppose just doing the top end is an option. I just don't know.....

Just got off the phone with Vancouver core supply in Surry. He has two complete cut outs for $400. for the long block and $600. for a complete engine with eveything on it.
Might be a option........

I spoke with Craig. I some times go over to Van. with my truck and could pick it up for you if you go that route.

What is a cut out?

$600 for a complete engine?

And the 3.8 for the SC is slightly different than the regular 3.8 I think?

By the way, I really appreciate all this support! We feel quite defeated and are starting to think maybe the junkyard is the new home for the car.

But I'd take the brakes, the PIAAs, maybe the seats (electric both sides like in my SHO), etc?

Then just let her go to the bone yard.

Cause in the end it's a 20 year old car worth $2K max.....

A cut out is a complete engine with everything needed to simply swap motors. Both motors are Super Coupe. It includes S/C, accessories, wiring, everything. I forgot to ask how many k where on the motors. Maybe give them a call and let him know whats going on. They seemed pretty straight up.

Brent here.

Last time I looked at the K's on the car it had over 220,000km.

Cant hurt to call him. You may be able to wrap this up for $1,200ish with install. Maybe ask your mechanic how much he would charge for a straight swap. I would imagine you would want to change some bearings and such while the motor is out. Minor 60k for the car wouldnt drive the price up that much and you would have peace of mind as well as a spare engine to poach off of in the future.Could make your day sunnier.

Sound logic.

I will try a call. I looked earlier today and there was the one cut out.

I looked at my mechanics shop after work and it wasn't there any more? Or maybe we searched incorrectly.

$1200 installed I could live with.

Thanks very much for the info.

As an aside, I think my right front (or both) ball joints are going on my SHO.... What do they say about it never just raining????

Just phoned that guy. His cut outs are not running engines, they are meant for rebuilds... Which leaves me exactly where I was.

Dang nabit!

Dang nabit! Is Right!!! Sorry to get your hopes up. I'm used to the following:
Half Cut Engine

No problemo.

We (Brent and I) are going to have to get down to Errington sometime soon.....

Just so I have a face to the name.

We might just drop in on the fly.

But no expectations of entertainment.

Just a visit.

I see Brent is already looking at VlRustangers Website....

I'm not a Rustang or Camaro kind of guy so I will resist!

If I had to buy something tomorrow, I'd be looking at CTS-Vs even if I can't afford one... Always the case.

No dice about the engine from Ontario. At least not now. He's wrestling with the same issues of part-out or keep and throw money at it. His is a '90 BTW, and it's pretty high mileage; probably need a freshening up too.

Let us know how you make out.

Sounds good, drop by anytime.

I'm with you on the CTS-V. My dad has a 2010. It's quite the ride! I'll let you know next time the folks are out, you can come out for a beverage.

Doug/Brent ... I'll drop by to see the local engine specialist near my buddy's shop before I head into work tomorrow. They do all the engine machine work for the Toyota Dealers. Also the one of the machinist drives a SC Coupe.

Hmmm.... Well it appears we are not dead yet. I actually got around to almost posting part pics at the SC site.

But things have changed.

Small change on the on the cost side. But the revenue side really improved.

OK, the scoop is my dad dropped of some pretty significant coin for Brent. Brent of course can't work and they felt sorry for him and his car.

Lordco has a $2600 Longblock rebuild option which takes eveything down aroun $1200. So say it's now $5K.

With the big cheque, we can probably cover all that and then thought to get the auto tranny looked at while eveything is out, maybe get a shift kit put in.

And we still wouldn't have done suspension, wheels, rubber, paint job etc....

$2000 car? I'm still deliberating but have asked for another estimate.

While gassing my SHO up yesterday I saw on the used car lot next door, a sliver, 1999 4 door silver Caddy STS with the Northstar V8. Immaculate interior. Black leather, every option you can imagine.

$6400. For what we might end up paying we could get this Caddy instead.

I'm going to take it for a test drive, just out of curiosity.
