Didn't yeild any extremelly useful stuff, as there was no mention of needing a harmonic balancer/dampener. So say if you got the internals all zero balanced and flywheel, pulley, etc, would that be good?

LOL... You can expand upon your search. The link is merely to prove a point.

FWIW, the SHO motor is an internally balanced motor. Balance the internals, then balance the dampner, flywheel, clutch, etc.

Since I have read that a billet crank is better than knife-edged or what-not, is it even possible to get a billet crank for our shos? (mine is 3.2ATX) and if so, how much dough are we talking here.. cause I know billet parts aren't cheap..

One other question is when I am looking up parts for the engine internals e.g. the rotating assembly I see (like for my '90 Bronco XLT 5.8L 351W) that they have zero balanced internals (crank, rods, pistons, etc..) what does that mean? and is a harmonic balancer still required for zero balanced for high rpm?

Every engine, regardless of 'balance', creates harmonics in the crankshaft while running. Any engine run without a harmonic damper is at a very high risk of creating a multiple-part crankshaft. F/I cars are even more likely to have problems, due to the larger combustion forces acting on the crankshaft.

i dont know where people get the idea knife edge crank is stronger or some crap.

do some searching and you will find your awnser.

there is a lot of stock motors also running around without crank dampeners so...
but i agree every engine makes harmonics, f/i i feel it is a needed part. but n/a
**** i run my 3.2 mtx with all under drive pulleys to red line all the time, that dampener is wasted power :)

also about the billet crank question.
there was a recent 3.6 stroker crank that was billet for 2k there some time ago JEM i believe has the 3.6 in his car and i would imagine its a monster vs stock 3.2

So, if an engine is internally balanced (e.g. Zero Balanced) you just take in the rods, crank, dampener, flywheel (talking of an ATX) to a machine shop and have it all balanced together and have the machinist mark where everything needs to fit back together in order to be perfect (or close to) ?

I am wanting to know for my other project as it has a 351W, and would help me with my sho also for the mods I want to do to it.

Thanks everyone for their time and advice, you have all been a great help.

I also have a question, is there anyone here in NW Washington Area that wants to make a couple hundred bucks to help me change a rear main seal in my Bronco? :p:swing: Biggest problem is I don't have a torque wrench, or a trans jack to move the beast, once that's out, the rest is easy.

Unless you're wanting to run 1,200hp/800tq, your money is better spent elsewhere.
