looks like a cast crank in that picture why is that. did it get real hot or somethin? i thought a forged crank looked like every surface is machined. that one looks like the counterweights (porkchops) look like they are cast.

When you have no idea what you're talking about, it's a good idea to (a) be quiet and (b) do some research.

see how the counterweights (porkchops) are MACHINED? the counterweights on that crank in the last picture is definately not machined. they are not sharp and perfectly smooth like a forged crank. say what you will, that crank doesnt look like a forged piece to me.

well forgive me everyone for making this a discussion on forged stuff. i looked into it a little more and realized that both crankshafts are forged but they are forged differently.

a forged piece that has a perfectly smooth surface is one that was probably cold forged. or else it was compression forged and the factory machined every surface to obtain perfection or just to size the parts properly after the forging process. i was under the impression that anything that is forged has no surface that is not machined but that is not the case. sorry everyone ;(

when its machined like that, is that what they refer to as a knife edge crank?

i don't know, but i'm betting your right. every surface on my duratec crank is machined like that. it may also have something to do with the blueprinting process. everything is balanced from teh factory (obviously)

if you closely look at the pictures you can see the only reason they let go was machining like doug had mentioned.
if you look at the fillet radiuses you can see how it broke after the radius cut right where the bearing sits.

these cranks use the strongest design used in even aftermarket cranks for small block and even big blocks.

only 1 thing is stronger and thats making a billet crank.
i havent seen a factory crank use them yet.
but the billet isnt much stronger vs this factory forged just maybe higher elongation rating.

question..

Since I have read that a billet crank is better than knife-edged or what-not, is it even possible to get a billet crank for our shos? (mine is 3.2ATX) and if so, how much dough are we talking here.. cause I know billet parts aren't cheap..

One other question is when I am looking up parts for the engine internals e.g. the rotating assembly I see (like for my '90 Bronco XLT 5.8L 351W) that they have zero balanced internals (crank, rods, pistons, etc..) what does that mean? and is a harmonic balancer still required for zero balanced for high rpm?
