That would be to let the hot oil drain for 30 minutes from the top of the engine down into the pan. Of course you could start the oil change immediately after and just leave it for 30 minutes to get the same results. There is a risk of an oil pump losing it's prime if you leave it draining oil too long during an oil change though. That's probably the reasoning behind the advice you were given.

Losing it's prime??? Really? Damn. My dad always lets his fleet vehicles drain overnight! Never ever had a problem with an oil pump losing it's prime. That doesn't mean that it can't happen, but is that so much different than changing an oil filter without putting oil in it before you screw it on? No matter what you do, the engine is still going to be without oil for a few seconds on startup, especially right after changing the oil. When I change my SHO, I always do it HOT and let it sit for at least 30-45 minutes. I've never had a problem, but I also put 1/2 quart of oil in the filter before I put it on. Who knows, maybe I'm just lucky. But, I also use those forbidden FRAM filters, with excellent results I might add, and Havoline 10W-40. Never ever seen a cleaner or quiter DOHC engine with so many miles on it.

Yeah it is different. If the pump loses its prime your engine can run for 30 seconds or more with no oil eek! ! I've never had it happen to me, but I never let my oil drain overnight either. dkautumna's father in law had this happen to his car after letting it drain overnight.

BTW, the first thing to try if your oil pump loses its prime is to fill the oil filter with oil and reinstall. That doesn't always work but it's easy. Probably helps explain why you haven't had problems.

IMHO, it ain't worth it to get every last drop of oil out of there contrary to what my daddy taught me.

Its always a good practice to fill your oil filter with as much oil as possible to eliminate dry start up after a oil change. I've known people that would take it one step further and pull there coil wire off and bump the motor over to get oil pressure before the intial start up.
