I've yet to find any solid info on the Smartlink system. Looks like Ford is presenting this as well as they did the Remote Access.

At $325 including 2 years of service...I would've considered getting that myself.

I can't help but wonder if this is the same thing as the connected car modules we've been installing in our cars in the fleet this year. GM is connected car equipped from the factory, Chrysler is going to it, and our add on's are a small unit that plugs into the ALDL with very little set up required. In our case, it transmits fuel level, mileage, tire pressure and cel data when our cars check in and out, and possibly tracking. I think the ultimate goal in our case will be able to rent and check in from your phone once the initial roll out is done. My brother has a new Lexus LX500 and he can do just about anything you can imagine from his cell phone so I guess this is the next step in the future for all of us.

jmr...the listing doesn't list Taurus. I assume you've found a particular part # that works with our cars for SmartLink?

I'd consider the upgrade, if it's confirmed that it works and does come with a 2 year service.

Wow the smart link is pretty awesome but not worth the yearly price you should only be paying for the data connection in that subscription and 200 is alot for a year most charge that for 3 years

The unit cost is $325 and that includes 2 years of service. Hot spot is free for 1 month/1gb (whichever is reached first) then you have to sign up with Verizon if you want to continue the hot spot. I’m not doing the hot spot. Not sure many people would.

As far as I know the monthly charge after the two year period is not known right now but the dealer contact said he was told 5 or 6 bucks a month but I won’t believe that until I see it.

$325 for the hardware and two years of service isn’t bad if you ask me. When I bought remote access I think the outlay for the hardware was even more than that which didn’t include the $50 a year service fee. Hopefully Ford stays on top of the mobile app situation as well. One terrible experience with the company that maintains the Ford Remote Access app was when Apple had some mandatory app requirement for iOS 11 (i think that was it) and the app company was way behind and failed to get an update out on time and you couldn’t use the app for quite some time. LOTS of people were complaining and disappointed.

Obviously right now the Remote Access hardware is cheap since places are trying to off load units as Ford isn’t officially supporting the sale of it anymore.

Odd I had just saw smart link on Ford's site or talking about the older remote access hardware I thought originally that's what everyone was talking about

I mentioned something about $249 a year in this thread. I had read something in these forums...perhaps in the "What Did You Do..." thread were a cost like that as mentioned. Perhaps xFallen read my post, or where it was originally mentioned.

When I bought my system, it was partially based on my understanding about costs at the time. While I'm sure we all want "better, faster, longer", all I wanted was the better range for remote start, so I can't say I'm unhappy with what I have with Remote Access.

FWIW, I was looking at the Ford Remote Access site, and they say that the device works in areas with 3G or 4G.

Well, had another issue tonight with Remote Access. It worked today...but acted up tonight. I am wondering if leaving the app open in the background on my phone may be an issue. Came home, unplugged and re-plugged the cable. Restarted the app. Works. Going to try closing the app next time so that it's forced to sign in.

Interesting...I was looking up accessories for some vehicles tonight and Remote Access is listed again. Not sure how long it has been back up.

Well..it's not working again today. It acted up a few days ago and I once again unplugged and plugged back in.

I called the 800-FORDKEY line who were worthless. Worthless. They asked the model year...and when I said 2018 they said they have no tech help as "it's not compatible with 2018". Mentioning that it was the same car as '17....they repeated...."not compatible".

I'm going to the dealer today and going to look into the SmartLink.

I called Nate at the link listed above. He says the parts are available for SmartLink, but that he cannot "activate" the system until October on a 2018. (Way to go Ford) Apparently it needs to be somehow set up by a dealer once installed.

I gotta sort this or I'll be jumping ship to the new system...

Yea I'm sure they firewalled some of the connections thru obd so they need to program some routes in to be able to start the car by sending a signal thru the obd although they never should of made it possible thru obd
I wonder how that's going to effect the cell signal.
