because when the weak MTX blows youre not going anywhere... wheras when the weak automatic transaxle is on its way out, you get really hard banging shifts, thus the flex pipe is needed to absorb the extra shock that the weak ATXes give
ford was definately thinking into the future with the SHO's

MTX uses a spring loaded flexible joint. There is a donut shaped gasket that acts in the same mannor as a flex pipe, allowing engine movement without breaking pipes.
