Flex Pipe Disconnected!

This thing sounds killer with the flex pipe unbolted! I just had to hear it so I unbolted it this afternoon, was going to remove the cat but couldn't get it to move very much. Anyway, this thing sounds like a freakin' race car. I had the garage door open when I cranked it up and the nieghbor next door was looking hard to see what was making all that noise, it was very loud and very cool.

the flex pipe gasket is high and the only place i found it was the ford dealer but i went to the auto parts store and got a universal paper header gasket for 3.99 and i had to cut the the holes out but it worked and sealed. But it has to be the round 4 hole gasket. not the triangle. but it does sound mean as heck. but with the cheap gasket i can unhook it more often.

I re-used the metal gasket, which is in between the flanges connecting the flex pipe and the cat,you should not have to buy anything. I just unbolted everything to hear what the V8 sounded like uncapped and wanted to remove the cat, heard it, then bolted it all back up when I couldn't move the cat very much, I will try to remove it later when I can get the car up higher in the air, I guess you have to beat the cat with a hammer to get it to move, I was dealing with limited space. Everyone should hear what our engines sound like uncapped like that, it is awsome!!!

my bolts was so rusted that i had to take a torch and cut them off to remove my y pipe :cry:

FWIW, you may want to leave the 3rd cat in. Removing it doesn't really make the car faster except in the top end. You just move the HP peak higher in the rpms, at the expense of some bottom end pull. All the fastest 1/4-mile N/A V8SHOs have had the 3rd cat installed.

Your best bet is to do what Ian did and put in an exhaust cutout so you can keep your 0-60 by running the 3rd cat, and also be able to open it up for high speed runs.

Actually my cutout resides where my third cat used to be. And I've gotten better times with the cutout installed than I did with the stock exhaust. Not a whole lot better but better nonetheless.

I don't race my SHO, but my work commute does involve a few miles of interstate driving. I would just like a little more sound from the exhaust without spending a whole lot of money.

Do you have aftermarket mufflers? If not, go to a local exhaust shop and have them look at your car and give you an idea on how much a basic stainless steel muffler setup would be. I've had tons of compliments on my Flo-Pro mufflers which cost me about $120 installed.
