so the time is coming for me to start looking for a new dd. When I was in high school I owned a 92 sho mtx. That car was a total piece that barely made it down the road, but it made it down the road in a hurry lol. I was not nearly as car savy back then as i am now, not to say that I am a master mechanic now, but I deffinitely know my way around a wrench a little better. I really want to own another. I am aware that these cars are very maintenance sensetive and was wondering if any knowledgable people on here can help me out remembering the common problems to look for in these cars. than you and any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Got the itch for another SHO do you? The hard part will be finding a Gen 1/2 that's worth buying. I live in Denver and hadn't seen a Gen1/2 SHO in I swear a year until two weeks ago when I saw a nice silver Gen2. I would plan on spending $1000 in maintanance for engine and suspension work if you do it yourself. Weak points are undersized flywheels on early Gen 1 SHOs. You can confirm the upgrade buying pulling the starter if owner doens't know. 93 automatics transmissions aren't as good as 94/95 either. Top and bottom 60K services would be good starting point. Search this sight for lots of information.

Aside from rust and the normal interior wear, here are the things to look for (imho):
Oil leaks from valve covers or front or rear seals. Keep in mind that you have 3 cam seals as well as crank seal on the front.
Oil leaks from the power steering pump area or ps hoses.
Any leaks from cv joints
Carefully check the condition of the rubber bushings on the control arms and radius rods, both front and rear.
Check the condition of brake pads, rotors, and also engage the parking brake and make sure it disengages.
Push down ******* each corner of the car to check the condition of the struts.
If its an atx, check how it shifts at light throttle, medium throttle, and hard throttle. Hard or soft shifts are a sign things are headed south.
Check out the a/c and heater so you know the blend door operates properly and the a/c is charged, etc.

If you find one that passes all of that, you should have a pretty decent car.

Yeah i don't plan on buying an ATX, and I wouldn't mind taking a trip down south to get a good one

you might check Denver cl - there is a pretty nice 89 on there that supposedly has had a lot of care recently, so it might be worth what the guy is asking and it might save you the trouble of doing a lot of maintenance right off the bat. All I know about it is what I see online, but it has some potential.
