Should the steel insert on a fidanza sit above the aluminum around it? On mine it appears to be on flush with the aluminum around it. I’ve heard the recommendations to get the flywheel machined before install because the factory doesn't always do a great job. If the insert is flush with the alumin around it, can the insert still be machined? What exactly should I tell the machinist to do?

I would install the insert and have the shop blanchard grind the FW so that it's all flat.

Actually, that's what I did do.

This is what mine looked like brand new.

And I didnt re-grind mine before installing , and I got no issues. But If I would have done it , I would bring the whole unit , not the insert alone.

X2 what Ian said. Run a straight edge across the face, there should be zero clearance anywhere. If you can't find a place to blanchard grind it, at least turn it.

So the shop would end up machining the alumin down with the steel part as well? Whats that black ring under the flywheel bolts? Did yours come with that?

I installed my fidanza in my 93 straight up, never had a problem... with the flywheel that is. I have also recently had it resurfaced (didn't authorize it but the machine shop decided to do it w/o asking me) for when i put it back in my car again finally. So i called fidanza and they said that shouldn't be a problem:thumb:

X3 on just barely machining the flywheel to make sure it is flat (after the the insert is installaed)

Other issues to look out for:

1) Make sure you use the right set of dowel pin holes. Fidanza has two ways to install them, and one is in the wrong location.

2) Make sure you test fit the pressure plate without the clutch disk to make sure the dowel pins do not bottom out in the PP. Every Fidanza I have seen had pins that were too long and held the PP away from the flywheel. I told them about this, but last I checked they pins were still a little too long (just grind them down a bit after install).

My 1st Fidanza was NOT strait! Clutch chatter from day one. It got a little better with age but was never perfect.

Alway's check for a strait and flat surface. If ANY varation is found, get it ground.

Times 3, 4, and 5 on the too long dowel pins.

The black ring around the flywheel bolts is from an ATX flexplate.

the black ring acts like a washer, steel bolt heads will gall bare aluminum.
