Well, I failed the Maryland Emissions test today. I really am not surprised. I have never had a used car that passed. My SHO failed the hydrocarbons. State Standards is 0.9000 GPM; mine was 3.7768 GPM. I also failed the Oxides of Nitrogen test. State Standards are 2.1000 GPM; mine was 4.9023 GPM . I guess its time to throw some money at my car. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I should start???

This isnt really performance upgrade related so this is in the wrong section. Does you sho have EGR ? or a high flow y pipe? If you EGR system is not performing well it will cause higher NOx output.

I thought the MTXs outside cali didn't have egr? seeing as how the poster is from maryland he probably got a 49 state car (safe guess?) Do you have any codes you can check? If I had to guess I'd say check your 02 sensors, clean your MAF, reset the computer, run 89/91 octane....

I really dont know how to tell if my car has or has not an EGR. What should I look for?? I took my MAF off a few days ago and cleaned it with contact cleaner even though it appeared clean. When I first got the car it did show a code for canister purge solenoid circuit failure. Code 565. However, I dont smell any gas and the car seems to run OK. Also, how do you check the o2 sensors? I have until Dec. 28th to show repairs and retest but I would like to start now. Perhaps, I will end up making my SHO run as fast as I hear they are supposed to.

Pull the spout connector. It is grey and looks like a small fuse. It is located by the engine test harness. I got mine to pass no problems.

When I pulled my spout the HC went up some but the NOX went down. This guy is too high for both. If you have an EGR, I would clean the ports and check the valve. I would also get new cats (good time to pick up that y-pipe) and O2 sensor.

Been thinking about getting a y pipe with high flow cats and putting in 02s at the same time. Where should I buy my y pipe and 02 sensors? I also might as well finish it off with a good catback. I want a car that sounds mean. I had a firebird that had a V6 but sounded like it had a V8. Had a deep low grumble sound. Any ideas on what kind of set-up would make a SHO sound low and mean? :salute:

No one asked but do you have a check engine light on at any time, if so start by checking your stored codes and go from there.
As far as making your sho sound "mean" like a V6 or V8 GM car forget it it, its not going to happen, That deep sound is from american pushrod motors and longer piston strokes, our shos are pure rice. We get higher RPMs but less growllll. If you get high flow cats, put on a wider catback, remove the resonator and install dual fart cans, youll sound just like a dual exhaust 6 cylinder CRX with fart cans and drop about 1200.00 bucks for the pleasure of decreased performance because of lost back pressure and most likely a couple of tickets for noise violations or at least unwanted attention from the authorities, plus your emmisions problems will have just begun. Just a few facts tossed in with my IMHO BTW before anyone gets insulted when I first bought my sho and didnt know better I dropped 1100.00 in high flow cats and dual high flow "Reactive" SS fart cans trying to get it to growl, it just sounds like a 6 cylinder CRX with fart cans, although IMO it looks good with the pipes, it really only turned out to be expensive cosmetics that get dragged on the asphalt everytime my car car breaks down and has to be towed home as I cringe. LOL
