fading clearcoat

I have a green 91 plus that looks pretty good except for the fading spots in the clearcoat at the top of the fenders and doors. Can this be buffed polished out or is new paint the only fix?

I've had the same problem with just about every Gen 1 i've owned. I think you can just wet sand it and have the clearcoat resprayed.

I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't try the re-clearcoat idea. From what I know about paint, count on doing the whole shebang unless it's a car for resale. Paint's too thin to risk sanding and saving the base color, IMHO. The sun's already done it's UV damage, and you'll at least need to remove ALL of the clear on the part to do a proper job or the "sunburn" will be back in no time. I had a black '86 Lincoln Mk VII that I removed the clear from the original paint with just a pressure washer.

The red on my spoiler is doing the same thing and looks terrible. Base color has turned to a burgundy shade, too. The rest of the car is excellent... frustrating...

The clearcoat is done for if it is clouding & flaking, it will need to be removed and/or sealed over or it will just soak up any coatings that are sprayed on then swell the oxidized topcoat. It will look terrible if its not sealed first.

Ok, well it will probably be awhile before it gets a paint job then. The turbo project car is getting painted first. I just figured that if buffing it would improve the looks any until I can repaint it than I would give it a shot.

You will find that the dead clearcoat will just buff away exposing the colorcoat.

Not Maaco!
Your paint would start pealing within the year or even month
They use cheap paint, and do not do prep work well

I didn't know oxfords had clearcoat, i thought it was mix with the color coat
or is your color coat peeling
