Extended Warranty - worth it or not?

Hey SHOForum members,

The 2013 SHO with PP I bought just passed 99K. A quote from the local Ford Dealer for a 3 year 36K extended plan is about $2800. I'm awaiting details on it but wanted to get some thoughts on whether it's worth considering or should I just keep the fluids clean, and save the $2800 for when/if something big goes. Also wondering if there are any plans this crew would recommend. The car was checked out by a mechanic before I bought it and all checked out OK. He did note some mods on the turbos (I think) that explained the vacuum noise I hear when de-accelerating. It also passed the state inspection in the state I bought it (as required by that state), and at the Ford dealer near me in MA. So I think the minor things are fine, but have read about some of the issues with the AWD system and turbos. I don't race it, rather a regular / aggressive-at-times for a little fun driver.

Really depends on the person, in my opinion with extended warranties your not paying for parts your paying for labor. If you would replace your own transmission or ptu by just buying a replacement and putting it on. Id say dont get a warranty, if you are gonna have a mechanic do all the work anyways id recommend going with the warranty. Other than that, download an owners manual and print it out all the services are in there and you can have the mechanic sign and date the pages and keep them for your records

What does the warranty include? Where did you get the quote? What kind of mods? vent to atmosphere? aftermarket blow off valve?

I would price out a what a water pump replacement costs. I would price out what both turbo replacement would cost. Then I would cost out what a transmission replacement would cost.

The water pump and trans replacement will be more than the $2800. The trans will run you $5800+ plus with labor.


Will you drive more then 36,000 miles in 3 years? Are those parts prone to fail with the next 3 years or 36,000 miles?

Hi, The quote was from the local ford dealer. Waiting on the brochure with all the details. Based on the prices of the items mentioned by SM105K, seems like a no-brainer to get the warranty since I'm a driver, no mechanic. The mod I'm aware of is a carbon cold air intake.

I'd get rid of that ASAP and find a stock air box or one of the dual cones, that cone is absolutely tiny, you've got like 1/2 the surface area of the stock filter so you've got a major restriction there, on top of that the heat shield it provides is practically useless. There's no real heat right there ..

I would suggest you shop that warranty around to the Ford warranty online sellers. You will have to get a warranty inspection from a Ford dealer (as it will be required by your Ford dealer offering as well). Some of the warranty sellers have a copy of teh checklist on their website. You can find substantial savings and customize it as you like.

Look at Zeigler Ford, Lombard Ford, maybe Flood Ford. I forget all the popular cheap ones. You will go there look at the plans and pick what you want quotes on. Shop the price around and make sure to compare the coverage and terms as some will vary a little so.. apples to apples. Those are all official Ford warranties.

Hes already had the inspection done and was offered the warranty by his dealership.....

Not sure what people dont seem to understand. Ford and Mazda have been using CAI from the factory ok their performance cars for OVER A DECADE. All you guys that go buy a $100 CAI at autozone and slap it in are doing yourselves some serious harm. Just leave the stock air on there unless you plan to upgrade the turbos, the stock airbox can flow more than the stock turbos can pull. If you really wanna make a difference on your intake heat wrap the plastic parts or replace them with metal, but for the love of God don't go replace an 8"x14" square filter with a 5"x10" cone.

You might find that Ford will not provide a warranty after inspection, due to the mods. Before getting inspected, try to return the vehicle back to stock as much as possible, beforehand.

he said in the original post that it passed a 99k inspection and he was offered the warranty by his dealership. The inspection has already been done and the warranty has been offered

I had the state inspection, at the dealer. They require a different inspection before selling the warranty.

You will need a hard copy Ford inspection form filled out at a Ford dealership service Dept. and send it to the online seller of the warranty if you choose to go that route.

The M Design Carbon intake flows just as much as a stock air box. IIRC MD went out of business, so there aren't readily available parts for replacement. I remember some of the carbon pieces failing. You are not hurting any performance if you keep it on the car.

I would invest in a stock air box and a K&N drop in if you were to remain stock turbo, and need one further down the road.
